Here's a new Spider-Man: Edge of Time video so fresh from the floor of Comic-Con that its heart is still racing a bit from meeting Garth Ennis. In it you'll find more than your fair share of web hammers, well-orchestrated falling and, puzzlingly, exploding punches. Enjoy.

What better place to drop some info on the latest Spider-Man game than Comic-Con? While Spider-Man: Edge of Time doesn't have the Mirror's Edge-style gameplay we didn't know we wanted until seeing the Amazing Spider-Man trailer, it does have something far more concrete: a release date of October 4.

The date was announced during an Activision event at San Diego Comic-Con today, along with the release date of Prototype 2, though Activision already dropped that info earlier today. There was a lot to like about Beenox's first swing at Spidey with last year's Shattered Dimensions, but our review criticized the game for feeling "rushed." Is just one year enough time to make sure Edge of Time doesn't feel similarly rushed? We'll get some hands-on time with the title at Comic-Con and let you know how what our Spidey-sense says.

Developed by Activision-owned studio Beenox, Spider-Man: Edge of Time challenges the player to take on the roles of both classic Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 to correct a timestream gone awry and prevent a catastrophic future brought on by the early and untimely death of Peter Parker. Spider-Man: Edge of Time is a focused, action-packed adventure [...]

Remember, we still don’t know what platforms this game is going to, but I’m sure Wii/DS are a shoe-in.

This weekend saw the announcement of a new Spider-Man game, the second from Activision’s Beenox. Called Edge Of Time, it… it… I’m still trying to get my head around exactly what it’s all about. There seem to be two Spider-Mans, one all angry looking, trying to save each other by manipulating different time lines. See if you can make better sense of what looks like a fun Spidey beat-em-up in the trailer below.

#firstlook In order to help the Amazing Spider-Man save the future, Spider-Man 2099 has to save the past. That's the kind of convoluted story you get when you start messing with temporal physics, but who cares when it looks this good? More »

OK, that Spider-Man game reveal slated for this weekend? Go ahead and keep your date with a liveblog of that WonderCon Beenox Studios-led panel, but go into the endeavor with these knowledge nuggets in tow: the game is called Spider-Man: Edge of Time, and it’ll feature a split narrative in the “connected and evolving” timelines of classic Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099. In other words, Edge of Time will have two distinct settings--the catch being that what Spider-Man does in one world will, supposedly, have an effect in the other as the dual Spider-Mans change the others’ timeline.

But why are these worlds colliding? Ah, you see, Peter Parker, somehow, gets good and dead before his corporeal number is called, so as the player, you’ll be tasked with fixing the error by switching back and forth between classic Spider-Man and the 2099 future.

No platforms have been mentioned as of yet, but the title is slated to release this Fall across, I’m assuming here, every platform that Activision considers viable. That panel I mentioned earlier will indeed feature the first “sneak peek” of the game, so stay tuned over the weekend to get a first taste of Spider-Man: Edge of Time. In the meanwhile, I suppose you can just stare at that delightful artwork.

The developers of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, a game universally hailed by critics (including myself!) as “fine”, are making a sequel entitled Spider-Man: Edge of Time. It’s hard to know what’s more remarkable- that the press release says it’ll be set in two different timelines at once in a Day of the Tentacle style, or that they’re turning it around in under a year since the previous game. No screenshots just yet, so as a placeholder I’ve embedded a decent episode of Baman Piderman after the jump. (more…)
