Capcom apparently doesn't want us or anyone else knowing the launch date for upcoming Dead Rising budget spinoff, Dead Rising 2: Off the Record. Though the Japanese publisher's European blog posted details of the game's release date recently -- October 11 in North America and October 14 in Europe, by the way -- the post has since been pulled. Thankfully, some quick Googling reveals that the post did in fact exist at one point.

It's always possible that the release dates were incorrect, but we're more inclined to believe it was simply posted before someone important said, "Go ahead." We've asked Capcom for confirmation, but haven't heard back as of yet.

Many were surprised (and a bit saddened) to hear Frank West wouldn't be in Dead Rising 2 when it was announced. DLC alleviated some of that desire to see the guy who's covered wars (you know) make a return, but Capcom will up the ante later this year with a new edition of Dead Rising 2, placing West in the spotlight as protagonist once again. Today, Eurogamer reveals that Dead Rising 2: Off the Record will be a $40 title.

There's been a lot of criticism for the game since it was announced, which initially appeared to be a cash-in preying on those who just wanted to play as Frank West once again. With some added content and this lower price point, Capcom hopes consumers will be more receptive. "There's a ton of added value here," executive producer Jason Leigh told Eurogamer. "We have the new environment, weapons, combo weapons, new clothing, food items, vehicles, new bosses and the new story. It's a much bigger game than Dead Rising 2 was."

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record is slated to uncover the truth sometime in Q4 2011.

My immediate reaction to Dead Rising 2: Off the Record is probably the same as many of you - a resounding "huh?" I liked Dead Rising 2. It fixed just enough of the things that halted my progress in the original game to coerce me into tolerating the things that I still didn't care for, like the ...

What is it? Dead Rising 2: Off the Record takes inspiration from Capcom's history of Director's Cut re-releases, according to developer Capcom Vancouver (formerly Blue Castle Games). Off the Record reimagines the Fortune City Incident of the original Dead Rising 2, this time casting the first Dead Rising's main character, war photographer Frank West, as the hero of the hour.
