Non-Americans, you can finally play Darksiders II. While we’ve no idea why at least the UK release was mysteriously delayed by a full week, other than THQ’s apparent absolute determination to spew money away at every opportunity, it remains a game that’s absolutely worth your pennies. To read my review of it, head yourself over here. Spoiler: I liked it a lot.

To hear John tell it, Darksiders II is a wondrous thing – a Frankenstein chimera of other games’ best bits, but infused with its own unique spirit and rippling apocalypse biceps. But, shockingly enough, all is not well in the land of War, Death, Strife, and Fury. The PC port’s been decried as incredibly barebones – with nearly non-existent graphics options, lousy menus, and the occasional irritating glitch composing its emaciated frame. To Vigil’s credit, however, it’s incredibly sorry about Death’s wardrobe malfunction at his big bash, and – at the very, very least – it’s trying to patch up the missing bits.

#darksidersii I was far from the only reviewer to observe that Darksiders II very clearly draws inspiration and ideas from a number of other games that came before it. Happily, it does so well, and it does so successfully. The mechanics and concepts it brings forward from other games are nearly all good ones, and for the most part they're integrated together well. Oran has been asleep for ages. When he is awaken him from his slumber, he notices that his body parts have walked off in the night. Oran leaves it up to Death to play fetch and bring them back in this walkthrough.

Kyd's soundtrack evokes big, open (but not necessarily friendly) places for Death to adventure in and around. There's a peristent theme throughout many of the tracks in the second half which is a little hard to describe, but it's this sort of soaring yawning stretch of music that's pitched differently each time it crops up in "Into the Shadows" or "The Crypt."

Darksiders II builds upon the previous game in some really exciting ways, but even people who can't make that comparison will enjoy the weighty combat and multifaceted character development.

My only serious reservations come from the performance issues, which didn't detract from the experience enough to override all of its good qualities. Most importantly, it delivers on the promise of the first game without losing its identity. Give Death a try.

Without experiences like Darksiders II, gamers would just be skin and bones -- jaded at the thought of anything that doesn't try to change the world. I guess what I'm trying to say is that fun really does conquer all.

With a unique protagonist, killer art style, savvy level design, and ferocious combat, there's little left for an action fan to want, while the role-playing elements have been enhanced to such a degree that the overall experience feels deeper and more compelling than before. If this game is not a success, then truly the world doesn't know what's good for it.
