Today marks the 25th anniversary of the very first Castlevania game -- one you likely didn't play, since it came out only on the Japanese MSX computer. But luckily for millions of fans worldwide, it was ported to the NES, a system with much wider appeal, and touched off a franchise that has enraptured fans of movie monsters, whip-wielding barbarians, fur-coated bishounen, and frustration.

In honor of that anniversary, and the relative obscurity built into its circumstances, we've rounded up some aspects of the series that may have gotten lost in the labyrinthine reaches of your brain, like a delicious pot roast hidden behind a brick wall.

That's right, this Tuesday you'll be able to yet again storm Dracula's castle and totally kill him once and for all this time. We mean it. He's going to be super dead. Forever.

Jokes aside, Castlevania: Harmony of Despair will indeed arrive on PSN this Tuesday, September 27, with some added extras. There's couch co-op for up to four players (online multiplayer supports six vampire slayers), two additional characters in Julius Belmont and Yoko Belnades (paid DLC on Xbox Live Arcade) and an extra map: Pyramid of Ruin.

Konami announced a new Suikoden installment coming to PSP, Genso Suikoden: Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki, at Tokyo Game Show today. The new title has a website, trailer and Twitter account, one of which you can watch right here. You could watch the other two if you really wanted to, but we doubt they would have as many epic anime eyeball close-ups as the above trailer.

No word yet on pricing, gameplay, developer details or a release date, but that trailer should keep you occupied until more information emerges -- if it starts to get boring, make a game out of it. Every time a dramatically zoomed-in facial features fills the screen, take a shot of Sailor Jerry (or milk, as your age and country restrictions permit). The months will fly by.

It seems that the supermarket chains are quick to really slash prices on games, and this makes the rest of retail react accordingly. These lower margins are really hurting the UK's stance in the game industry, and making it less appealing to publishers.

Here's one to be filed in the verbose category of Games That Are Unlikely To Leave Japan But Contain Items That Suit Our Interests. Konami announced AR Combat Digi Q, an online tank combat game that relies on the PlayStation Vita's incredible capacity to augment reality itself. Or, you know, a neat camera-based game.

According to Andriasang, the Konami-published title is derived from its own line of infrared-controlled combat toys (read an insanely detailed review here). The Vita's analog sticks act as the remote control and the miniature vehicles are replaced by polygonal representations on-screen, placed atop whatever background is in view of the camera. That might be a few too many layers of abstraction if you just wanted to drive a tank like Pierce Brosnan did, but at least it cuts down on toy litter in the living room.

Like a whisper on the breeze or a particularly quiet spectre, the foot-to-ball season has begun once more. Of course, the quiet clamour of millionaires hoofing calfpelts is often drowned out by more mundane matters such as collapsing regimes and a crumbling global economy. That’s a joke of course. The global economy has crumbled. It is constituted entirely of crumbs. But, to return to the point at hand, the silly season is upon us and not enough people are repeatedly telling you that.
