The Last of Us is the first of 2013 to make it four weeks as the UK no. 1, proving that's it really clicked with the country's consumers. Naughty Dog's PS3 horror survives a week longer at the summit than both BioShock Infinite and Dead Island: Riptide did, albeit in what's been a quiet month or so.

The UK's currently consumed with its new champion of Wimbledon, the first British man to win the tennis tournament since the Stone Age. As for games, it's hardly championship stuff at UK retail, with very few new releases served up. The highest-ranking is Project X Zone, rallying to 18th. In the top ten there's barely any changeovers as Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition and Animal Crossing: New Leaf continue to be smashes, netting second and fourth.

Nintendo global president Satoru Iwata believes that his company can get back into the black without firing any of its employees, through good ol' fashioned efficiency and cost-saving measures.

"It is true that our business has its ups and downs every few years, and of course, our ideal situation is to make a profit even in the low periods, return these profits to investors and maintain a high share price," Iwata said during a recent shareholders meeting, in response to a question about "corporate restructuring" as a solution to Nintendo's problems.

"If we reduce the number of employees for better short-term financial results," he continued, "employee morale will decrease, and I sincerely doubt employees who fear that they may be laid off will be able to develop software titles that could impress people around the world." Iwata also noted that global exchange rates have played a major part in Nintendo's financial situation, saying that "the influence of exchange rates is the main aspect of this matter," rather than Nintendo's headcount.

"Employees make valuable contributions in their respective fields, so I believe that laying off a group of employees will not help to strengthen Nintendo's business in the long run," he said. "Our current policy is to achieve favorable results by continuously cutting unnecessary expenses and increasing business efficiency."

Japan's Club Nintendo service was hacked following thousands of unauthorized accesses across the last month. Nintendo announced that an internal investigation confirmed just under 24,000 illegitimate logins between June 9 and July 4, from over 15 million attempts.

As translated by Kotaku, Nintendo said customer information compromised in the attack includes full names, phone numbers, and home and email addresses. Happily, the service doesn't hold credit card information. Kotaku notes the attack is apparently limited to Japan's Club Nintendo, and other countries don't seem to be affected.

Unsurprisingly, Nintendo is strengthening Club Nintendo's security as a result, starting off with making users' old passwords invalid and requiring them to make new ones.

The fourth DLC character for Injustice: Gods Among Us, General Zod, is now available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U. The game's entire back catalogue of DLC has finally been pushed to Nintendo's console, along with a few new costumes that aren't available elsewhere in the US.

The "Ame-Comi" pack includes a new costume for Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Wonder Woman based on their respective appearances in the "Ame-Comi Girls" universe, which is rooted in DC Collectibles' anime-inspired line of action figures. Previously, these costumes were exclusive to the Japanese version of the game.

Additional costumes also dropped for all three versions of Injustice, including New 52 threads for Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, Blackest Night zombie skins for Batman, Aquaman and Hawkgirl, and Earth 2 variants for Solomon Grundy, Flash and Hawkgirl. The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game also get some fresh Man of Steel digs for Supes. A full breakdown of how much all this stuff costs can be found after the break.

Over the weekend it was learned that Nintendo lost its case to take over the website name wiiu.com—a domain registered way the hell back in 2004, before "Wii" even existed as a word or trademark. So what exactly did "wiiu.com" stand for nine years ago? According to the full text of the World Intellectual Property Organization's judgment, "wiiu.com" originally referred to some kind of semi-acronym meaning "We Invest In You." It was the name of a venture of Oceanside Capital Corp., a venture capital company, and the domain was registered by a Mr. Andy Tran on behalf of the company back in 2004. “WIIU is merely descriptive of the future purpose for which Respondent intended to use the disputed domain [name], in connection with a planned website entitled ‘We Invest in You’,” is how the domain holder described it. Nintendo, in its filing, alleged that wiiu.com was "first registered on Sept. 15, 2012 and renewed ... on Feb. 11 2013." But the domain's owner said Nintendo was alleging that a technical change in domain registration data was the same as a new registration, where wiiu.com was still under "an unbroken chain of underlying ownership by a single entity or within a genuine conglomerate." The WIPO panel also found that Nintendo did not meet its burdens of proving that the name had been registered and used in bad faith, nor that it proved that its owners "had no rights or legitimate interests in respect of the disputed domain name." For those reasons, the decision was denied, highly unusual considering how successful game companies have been in the past at recovering domains that reference their trademarks. Nintendo on Monday released a statement acknowledging its case had failed, while saying the company would examine its remaining legal options. Meantime, the official Wii U web site is www.nintendo.com/wiiu Nintendo of America, Inc., v. Domain Privacy Group/Domain Admin [World Intellectual Property Organization Arbitration and Mediation Center. h/t Hon. Neil Brown, QC Australia]

Input Lag is a condition that affects millions* of people - and now there's something we can all do about it. Competitive Street Fighter 4 player Adeel Soomro has compiled a database of 170 HDTVs and monitors that he put through the ringer with Leo Bodnar's Lag Tester, on a site called Display Lag.

Soomro rates the screens by "Excellent," "Great," "Okay" and "Bad," as defined here. All screens are listed by the variable of your choosing - brand, size, resolution, etc. - right here. The lag in question occurs due to additional processing by the display, which can cause a delay between your button presses and the results appearing on-screen. In reflex-focused games, such as fighters, lagging visual information can put players at a disadvantage when they need to react immediately.

"My personal favorite choice so far is the F7100 series from Samsung," Soomro writes. "This HDTV boasts a 40ms input lag rating in our database, meaning it will be responsive for the majority of gamers."

Check out the stats and pick your favorite HDTV or monitor for yourself.

*Dramatic made-up statistic.

The NPD Group, responsible for compiling and releasing monthly sales data of the gaming industry in North America, is attempting to address a hole in its retail-skewed data: digital point-of-sale information.

NPD plans to change its methods to include these digital POS figures, and change them "quickly," Games President David McQuillan tells Games Industry. McQuillan wants to prepare for the new consoles hitting shelves this holiday.

"We fully realize that the market needs the same level of information for the digital categories as exists for the physical business today: SKU-level POS," he says. "The progress on that effort up until recently has been slow and frustrating at times, but today I am very happy to share that the pace of progress has changed recently. NPD has formed a leader panel to track digital POS sales of full game and add-on content downloads."

The leader panel includes nine "leading games publishers," and it will first focus on full-game downloads and DLC for PC, consoles and mobile devices. The program is in beta now, and NPD is partnering with research company EEDAR to track digital POS numbers worldwide -not only in North America as its current system does.

Eventually the digital results will make their way into NPD's monthly reports, but there's no word on when that will happen. "Once we move past the beta or proof of concept phase, subscribers will have access to the full data set, which you would expect of any service," McQuillan says. "The level of information to be shared publicly has not been determined at this time."

Since 2010, NPD has tracked downloads of full games and add-on content, subscriptions, mobile games and social games, but it leaves out numbers from digital stores such as Steam, Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network in its monthly reports. The importance of these marketplaces continues to grow over the years, and last month the ESA called the NPD reports a "disservice to the truth." In 2011, EA called NPD's data "a misrepresentation of the entire industry."

An unnamed Ubisoft website has been hacked, and usernames, email addresses and password information has been compromised. Ubisoft claims that no finanical information was obtained but in an "abundance of caution" wants folks to change their info.

While Ubisoft's Uplay service is never mentioned specifically, as the only system housing customer data, it's a safe bet Uplay was used to access this information. Last year, a browser exploit was identified with the Uplay plug-in that endangered users by allowing certain malicious websites access to player computers.

Ubisoft introduced Uplay back in 2009 as a cross-game interface allowing for digital distribution and social services across Ubisoft games. In February, Ubisoft added third-party games from studios including EA, Warner Bros. and Focus Home Interactive.

Nintendo has commented on its unsuccessful effort to take control of the WiiU.com domain from someone who registered it back in 2004. "We are continuing to review our legal options," the company said in a statement.

Waiting for Monday for the Moneysaver, ain't nobody got time for that! Sometimes we have one-offs over the weekend, but today there was easily enough content to put together a full post. My Twitter feed is basically nothing but Animal Crossing: New Leaf at the moment, which means you should probably grab that one for your 3DS today. That hot Borderlands bundle is still live, Bioshock: Infinite is discounted for every platform, and you better buy The Godfather Trilogy on blu-ray. Normally when video game companies go into Internet name court to take over domains using their trademarks, they walk out a winner. So you'd think that Nintendo would be easily successful in the effort to get control of WiiU.com from a cybersquatter. You'd be wrong. Astonishingly, Nintendo's complaint before the World Intellectual Property Organization has been denied. The company was trying to get control of WiiU.com, which was registered back before even the Wii existed: Jan 13, 2004. No reason was given for the denial in the WIPO's decision, reached on June 19 but posted yesterday and reported by Fusible. WiiU.com right now is a placeholder page redirecting visitors to various links, some related to the Wii U, others not. This would seem to be an ominous sign for Microsoft, which also does not control XboxOne.com and has filed a complaint to take control of it—though that matter is before a different body, the National Arbitration Forum. Fusible noted that WiiU.com was up for auction before Nintendo filed its complaint in February. The company may now have to pay quite a hefty price if it wants the domain. I've reached out to a Nintendo representative. Any comment the company makes will be updated here. Complaint Denied: Nintendo loses dispute over WiiU.com domain name [Fusible] To contact the author of this post, write to owen@kotaku.com or find him on Twitter @owengood.

Soul Saga, Disastercake's self-described love letter to PSOne JRPGs, rocketed past its Kickstarter goal of $60,000 yesterday. A funding surge this week saw the game, now already confirmed for PC, Mac, and Linux, approach the cusp of its Wii U stretch goal of $80,000, which is now extended to also include PS4 and Vita following successful talks with Sony.

At the time of writing, Soul Saga sits at around $77,000 with 16 days of its fundraiser left to go, so the additional platforms stretch goal is on its last HP. Voice acting is confirmed after its required amount was cleared, while stretch goals further down the line include airship exploration "similar to Skies of Arcadia," a job board, and legendary weapons. The top goal is set at $250,000 and if cleared transforms the game, which is being positioned as the 20-hour first entry in a series, into something with "double the story and content."Retro JRPG Soul Saga funded, PS4 & Vita stretch goal added

Nathaniel McClure thought his resume would make it easy to break into the indie game industry. He worked at Activision for years, starting in 2002 with QA and quickly rising to producer on a host of AAA games, including Star Wars Jedi Knight 2, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, and a lineup of Call of Duty games.

By 2007, McClure wanted out.

"It was 3AM when I woke up on my keyboard at the office," he told me. "I was a few milestones in, working on my fifth Call of Duty title on my fourth straight year of promotion, when it hit me. If I was to keep loving what got me into making games I would have to quit one of the largest and most popular video games in the world, something I dedicated years of my life to."

McClure resigned that year, when he was a producer on Modern Warfare. He started his own studio, Epicenter, with the goal of making games that he - and other people, he hoped - would want to play. But indie development came with its own brand of bureaucracy, and dealing with publishers, platforms, funding and legal matters made McClure's journey more complex than he imagined.

"I thought my Call of Duty and Wolfenstein credits would land me a dev deal no problem," McClure said. "I was an idiot - it doesn't work that way, and I am grateful that it doesn't."

In 2009 - two studios, a handful of unfulfilled publisher promises and a few indie releases later - McClure founded Scientifically Proven. This year he'll finish development on a gothic, eye-catching action platformer, and what might be his favorite game ever: Blood of the Werewolf.

The year could end right now and we could already declare 2013 one of gaming's greatest years. Have we ever had a first-haf as stacked as this? Let's celebrate by having some friendly debates about which games were the best. First, to remind you of how good it's been, lets marvel at this horn of plenty we've been playing. This has been a six month period of Temple Run 2 and Ridiculous Fishing, of BioShock Infinite and The Last of Us, of Gunpoint, Antichamber, The Swapper and Monaco, of Injustice, Guacamalee, Battleblock Theater, and Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon. This has been a first half of a new Animal Crossing, a very new Devil May Cry and... wait... that superb new Tomb Raider was this year, too? And let's not forget Aliens: Colonial Marines. Hell of a first-half, people! I'll kick us off with some categories in the discussions below. Let's get the debate going in those. There won't be a formal winner, but let's see what kind of consensus builds. You're also free to make your own categories. Have fun! Rovio is catapulting the Angry Birds Trilogy onto Wii U and Wii later this summer, with a trailer dating it for the Nintendo systems on August 13. The compendium, comprised of Angry Birds, AB Seasons, and AB Rio, plucks some extra content on Wii U and Wii, while the Wii U version is off-TV compatible and of course features touchscreen controls.

Back when publisher Activision announced the Wii U and Wii versions of the trilogy, it also revealed the mobile money-maker had proven a success on consoles, too. The Xbox 360, PS3, and 3DS versions released late last year shifted a million copies by February 2013.

Pencil Test Studios' $900,000 Kickstarter goal to create Armikrog, a claymation point-and-click adventure project, has concluded with the team receiving $974,503 in pledges. It will also be possible to continue supporting the game's development through PayPal.

The project is being helmed by alumni of the 1996 classic The Neverhood, including Mike Dietz, Ed Schofield and Doug TenNapel - who has made headlines for his less-than-progressive views about same-sex marriage, among other topics. The game is scheduled to ship in July of 2014.

Ubisoft's latest promotion for Assassin's Creed IV might sound silly at first, but it's actually kinda neat. Basically, you can become part of the Assassin's Creed universe's history by putting your face on a huge oil painting of "an epic naval battle." You head to the website, pick any of the 137 characters depicted on the sketch, and submit a picture of yourself imitating them. As you can see in the video above, this may involve silly faces. After all that's done, the rest is up to the public—folks can vote on their favorite entries via social media, which then will be immortalized on the final oil painting by the artists of the French National School of Fine Arts. The painting will even be displayed in a museum; specifically, the National Navy Museum in Paris, between November 4 and December 3. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag hits current-gen consoles on October 29, and PC plus next-gen consoles later this Fall. As for the painting, I'd say it's worth checking out what people have been up to. Even if just for a few laughs. Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag - Defy History [Ubisoft] Questions? Comments? Activision has announced that Target will be passing out magic cards with pre-orders for the upcoming Skylanders Swap Force. Portalmasters who pre-order the game at Target will get an exclusive physical trading card that grants upgrades in the game when placed on the new Portal of Power.

Swap Force's marquee feature is that it uses characters with two parts that can be mixed and matched, but these specially branded trading cards will work as well.

There's also an ongoing deal (at all retailers) that grants a free "Lightcore Hex" Skylanders Giants character when you pre-order a starter pack. This Giants character, like all of the other characters in the series so far, can also be used to play through Swap Force content. If you're a parent of younger children, it's also something else for you to trip over.

This video runs for nearly seven minutes, and rarely pauses from showing you raw gameplay footage of one of the biggest upcoming Wii U exclusives. Yes, the audio is in Japanese, but you can still soak up the visuals.

As part of an ongoing Kickstarter campaign for its retro-styled JRPG Soul Saga, indie developer Disastercake has added an $80,000 stretch goal that will fund the creation of a Wii U port.

Soul Saga cites inspiration from the PSone-era Final Fantasy and Suikoden games, and promises to deliver a similar character-driven experience for Windows, Mac and Linux platforms. The Wii U version is the only confirmed console port so far, but Disastercake is currently in talks with Sony regarding a potential PS Vita release.

As of this writing, Soul Saga has earned more than $48,000 toward its initial funding goal of $60,000. Soul Saga is also up for vote at Steam Greenlight.

Toy Box mode is Disney Infinity's sandbox creation side, allowing you to construct your own worlds in real-time. What you create is based on what in-game content you've unlocked. It's an open-ended mode where Disney franchises can collide within the same arena, though we suppose that can be said about Disney infinity in general too.
