Battlefield 4 Message Board older than one year ago

EA has published a website for its Frostbite graphical engine, and text on the website mentions the existence of a project called Frostbite Go, which EA describes as "a mobile division empowering EA game developers with Frostbite's proven excellent workflows and features to bring true Frostbite experiences to all major mobile platforms." In other words, the company is putting together the technology to run Frostbite on platforms such as iOS and Android.

The blurb doesn't say which version of Frostbite the mobile engine will be based on, but given that Frostbite 3 is the new hotness around EA, it's a fair guess that the company is adapting the latest and greatest for Frostbite Go. We're supposed to see Frostbite 3 games arrive later on this year (with Battlefield 4 being the first of these), so odds are that any Frostbite Go-created products should hit the market at that same time.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say Battlefield would be a very different game if it didn’t have any guns. Perhaps you would instead aggressively point and yell at angry men until they realized you were even angrier, hurriedly stepping aside and saying, “Phew, I don’t want to mess with that guy.” Or maybe the series would simply be renamed “Field,” and you’d be in charge of a) tending to grass and b) callously sweeping aside dead bodies, coping with their lingering, bottomless stares as you hurl them into mass graves. (Someone, make this.) Regardless, that’s why EA’s not tossing out guns any time soon. It is, however, taking the ones it already has and going home – far away from the license-holders and manufacturers who might feel entitled to a chunk of their change.

EA are a company that thinks ahead. The Battlefield series may only be working on its 4th pure edition right now, but the publisher has just registered domains for www.battlefield13.com to www.battlefield20.com, ensuring that they’re secure for at least the next few Christmasses.

But Rock, Paper, Shotgun is a company that thinks further ahead. RPS is a business that doesn’t rely on such medium-to-long-term thinking. And so it is that we will be the first place for all your www.battlefield21.com news.

Here we have two new Battlefield 4 screenshots. Once you cross-multiply and divide for no reason, it's almost as if we have four Battlefield 2 screenshots, or eight Battlefield screenshots, or even one giant Battlefield 8 image. But math isn't really our strong suit.

I sure wasn't expecting there to be any pretty, pretty rainbows in Battlefield 4, but from this new screenshot released by EA, it looks like there'll be at least one. And aw, look at that, it's got a flower, too! And Michael "Omar" K. Williams' character, holding a huge machine gun. Use our image-annotation to let us know what else you see.

RPS’s own wayward ronin word master Cara Ellison, during a post-convention victory dinner, put it best: “GDC is where we first hear about all the stuff everyone will be talking about next year.” Maybe it’s a trend-setter, or maybe it’s just a megaphone for gentle tickles of trends that are already in motion, but the point remains: GDC tends to be pretty indicative of where we’re at. People often view E3 in that light, but the fact is, it’s a dinosaur wreathed in fireworks, frilly undergarments, and little else. E3 is a projection. GDC has evolved into its opposite: introspection. We look inward, and then we discuss. And this year – thanks to things like the renewed prominence of PC gaming, a focus on indies, and the #1ReasonToBe talk – I came away quite optimistic. That warm feeling does not, however, come without some rather glaring caveats. Same-y looking “next-gen” games. The IGDA’s insulting use of scantily clad dancers. A worrisome gulf between triple-A and indie. For each positive, there was an ugly negative.

This year’s GDC in one word? Contradiction.

On principle, I despise blink-and-you’ll-miss-it brief, nearly information-free teasers. Unfortunately, they’re also almost exclusively the chosen language of triple-A publishers these days – at least until they open the floodgates on enough footage to spoil the entire game a month before it comes out. I would, however, be remiss if I didn’t mention that a) Battlefield 4 very clearly exists and b) year of the boat (the previously discussed year of the bow successor) sails ever onward, major franchises crashing against its monolithic hull like brittle kiddie pool waves. Watch both of the thus-far released (ugh, argh, grr, bleh) teasers after the break and pluck delicious, delicious proof from the pudding.

Battlefield 4 will be set in modern times, DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson revealed at GDC Europe today. The game, which was announced with no pomp last month, will have a beta sometime next year, but little else has been revealed. However, with a lag time of six years between Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 3, why did the studio go with Battlefield 4 so quickly instead of heading back to Bad Company?

"There's a lot of things inspiring us as to how the franchise will move on. Everything from fans' feedback, to market research and, of course, what we want to build ourselves. It's not just one single thing," said Troedsson, continuing with a hint of sarcasm. "And, yes, I know Battlefield 4 is probably the most creative name we ever could come up with. I can't comment any more on that games because it's all secret."

However, he did go on to say, "We still want to stay in this genre, the modern day as it is. We feel this is a place we can be and continue with the series. Battlefield 4 can live in this space and be very successful."

Hinting, in conclusion, "That doesn't mean there might not be a Bad Company game again in the future."

"There will be other ways to get into the beta aside from MoH Warfighter. At this time, however, it is the only way to guarantee entry." So says Battlefield 3 community manager Ian Tornay, who took to Reddit to add some details about the recently announced Battlefield 4 beta.

He didn't say much beyond confirming there would eventually be other ways to get into the beta, and that Battlefield 4 would launch after the beta - big surprise there - but he was quick to assure the community that even though Battlefield 4 has been announced, DICE and EA will continue to support Battlefield 3 and its proposed expansions long after launch.

That's a hell of a way to announce a sequel to one of your biggest games ever, ain't it?

In what will probably go down as one of the more off-handed major product announcements in game industry history, EA just went ahead and announced that Battlefield 4 is a game currently in development. And it did so by lumping the previously unrevealed sequel in as a pre-order bonus for Medal of Honor: Warfighter.

Well, specifically, it lumped in exclusive beta access as a pre-order bonus. That's right, those who run right out and pre-order Warfighter will be granted special access to a Battlefield 4 beta which is scheduled for fall of next year. So if you pre-order this modern combat-oriented first-person shooter, you'll get access to the multiplayer beta for this other probably modern combat-oriented first-person shooter. What a deal, right?

I would probably find this all less gross if EA had previously announced Battlefield 4 and actually shown off some of what might be in store for players. But as it stands, we know nothing about Battlefield 4 except that it is a video game called Battlefield 4. So pre-order what is, according to EA's press release, "the most authentic shooter this holiday," and then get access to the beta for "the most authentic shooter next holiday, probably?" It just makes me feel weird all over. And not good weird, either.

Strong hints of a sequel to last year's Battlefield 3 surfaced over the weekend when a mention of a Battlefield 4 beta that could be accessed by pre-ordering Medal of Honor: Warfighter popped up on EA's Origin store.
