A portion of a Joystiq review...

It is entirely possible to play through the game using just the three figures that come packed with it, thereby sidestepping the financial minefield upon which Skylanders: Giants is so precariously stationed. Possible, but not particularly realistic. Much of the fun and variety in Giants comes from the abilities lurking inside its many different characters, and with an estimated $500 in new figures to collect, Giants becomes even more difficult to recommend.

A portion of a Dtoid review...

Skylanders: Giants is a simple but incredibly enjoyable game, packed with content should you decide to explore every nook and cranny. Despite the fact that a lot of the characters are pay-walled behind what is essentially physical DLC, it's still perfectly serviceable even with just the characters in the standard package.

An image of the Skylanders Battlegrounds mobile starter pack points to the Skylanders series - as we know it, with a portal - coming to iOS devices. The pack includes three Skylanders characters and a treasure chest, along with a connection portal. It's not clear whether the portal uses Bluetooth, which is built-in use across Apple's iOS lineup. Battlegrounds works on iPod, iPhone and iPad, according to the image.

With an iOS-connected portal it would be fitting for Battlegrounds to work with all current and coming Skylanders figurines. Giants toys are backward-compatible, after all.

Battlegrounds appears to be entirely separate from the Skylanders Cloud Patrol tie-in arcade shooter that launched on iOS in April. Joystiq has contacted Activision for more information regarding the image.

It’s Crush Hour!
Element: Earth
Character Type: Giant
Bio: Crusher knew from the moment he put on his father’s mining helmet that his true passion in life was crushing rocks. He was fascinated with rock-lore and traveled all throughout Skylands in search of rare minerals to pulverize with his powerful hand-crafted rock hammer, which he also named Crusher. But along his travels, he discovered that the evil Arkeyan King was also searching for rocks – to melt down into weapons of war. Crusher’s fury built up like an avalanche. After all, crushing was his job! So he put aside his life’s passion and decided to use his hammer for a greater purpose - crushing Arkeyan Robots!

#skylanders Remember the music video for Metallica's "One", featuring footage from the 1971 film Johnny Got His Gun, about the World War I soldier that lost all his limbs and the ability to see, hear and speak after being hit by a mortar shell? He was a prisoner in his own body, just like the Skylanders. More »

These two new Skylanders: Giants videos give a glimpse of action while also bringing new characters to the mix. The first video (above) introduces Chill, an elf that seems to enjoy throwing sharp objects.

Skylanders: Giants will hit retail shelves on October 21 for PS3, Wii, PC, Xbox 360, and 3DS. Check out another video and screens of the game after the break.

#skylanders Once the sworn protector of the SnowQueen, Chill lost her charge to the Cyclopean forces and has been attempting to atone for her failure ever since. She is a pink-skinned humanoid awash in a world of colorful creatures and towering giants. I identify with her. Her fragility. Her humanity. Her ability to toss horned arctic aquatic mammals. That is why I love her. More »
