Crytek's next flex of graphical muscle, Crysis 3, will be launching in February of 2013, which is just the tiniest bit more specific than the "Spring 2013" window known previously.

It was the night before Crysis 2′s launch, and all through Crytek, not a creature was stirring – not even a fry… tech. But then, in the midst of laying down for the extended cryogenic sleep that traditionally follows Crytek’s development crunches, one developer bolted upright. “Everyone,” he turned and said to the others, nestled in their infernal healing contraptions, “I feel like something’s missing.” Then his eyes bloodshot eyes went wide with horror. “We… we forgot the graphics.” And so it was that Crysis 2 shipped with no DirectX 11 support and only a few preset graphics options. In time, however, Crytek sent PC gamers an apology basket filled with magical pixels, and all was (mostly) well. And happily, with Crysis 3, the developer plans to include more graphics than ever before.

The way he's smoking dudes with that bow, you'd think it was Legolas underneath that suit. Or Ted Nugent.

Crytek continues its multiplatform approach to development with Crysis 3, aiming to satisfy everyone from console owners to the PC gamers that are so hardcore, they cosplay as "parallax occlusion mapping." The developer hopes to have Direct X 11 support for PC at launch this time -- one of several advantages, it says, of having spent 14 months creating content and enhancing CryEngine 3, as opposed to building it and an accompanying game for three major systems.

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure we're going to have that," said Rasmus Hojengaard, Director of Creative Development. "I don't know if we've announced that yet, but obviously we're going to have DirectX 11 support since we already did it [for Crysis 2]. We basically started from a Crysis 2 DX11 patch, as starting point, and then we developed our technology from there on. We'd be pretty stupid not to capitalize on the technology we did for that and utilizing that from the get-go."

Crysis 3 was running on PC during a recent unveiling in San Francisco, where Crytek showed off its vision of New York City as a devastated, metropolitan mire being swallowed by nature. While the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions aren't ready to be shown yet, Hojengaard says they will benefit from the studio's philosophy in art design, with the game being "actually less reliant on shader technology than, you know, just really good moods, good light setups, and good asset creation."

That approach, in turn, also supports the PC version, which still lives beneath the franchise's reputation for crippling even the most exorbitant hardware. "We also want to make sure, even if you're on the PC, even if you don't have the super powerhouse, nuclear power plant at home, you can still run the game and get a beautiful experience from it."

Most gamers will have shot down opposing forces in almost every scenario that you could reasonably imagine. We've fought them on alien planets, we've fought them on the wide streets of modern American cities and the winding, cloistered alleys of ancient European ones, we've fought them in Russia (a lot), we've fought them on deserted islands, in jungles, and literally on the beaches. And yes, we've shot at stuff in New York before, too. But it's never looked like this...

The hunted becomes the hunter! The ruined city is reclaimed! Stealth, bows, arrows, BWAARRR, painfully pretty pictures of a world in ruin. Crysis 3 has all this and more. Granted, the ‘more’ is mainly guns (which are also the new guns), explosions and aliens being punched so hard and so far that the lead character might as well rename himself Punchy McFist Airlines. Heck, for all I know he is called that. I probably wouldn’t even lose my monocle when a companion shouted to him, “McFist, these bugs are everywhere, you need to suit up and boot up!” I wouldn’t know what any of it meant but I’m used to incoherence in shooterland. Here’s the trailer.

#preview When one thinks of this industry's true tech-driven developers, one don't have to think too hard. Count them on one hand—Id, Epic, DICE, Valve, and Crytek. When these teams reveal their games, the titles often feel more like tech demos than game demos. Last night in San Francisco, Ca., Crytek debuted Crysis 3, and it was very much like seeing a tech demo. More »

Fairly substantial rumors popped up last week that the latest game in developer Crytek's popular Crysis shooter franchise would be getting an official announce sometime in the not-too-distant future. Apparently, that not-too-distant future translated to, like, a week, because hey, now we have a Crysis 3 announcement.

To be fair, there are parts of the Lower East Side that pretty much already look just like this.

The official announcement confirmed what we more or less already knew: that we'd be returning to New York City, and that our hero would have a totally sick looking bow. He's got that bow because he'll be traversing the dangerous rain forest environment that's evolved out of the domed city. Crytek promises seven distinct environments set across the domed NYC, as well as all manner of corporate chicanery and revenge plotting.

So, there you have it. Crysis 3 is totally a thing, and looks like it'll meld the jungle environments of the first game with the urban environments of the second one, to create some kind of Frankenjunglecity. EA states the game is expected to release in Spring of 2013. There are pre-order bonuses too, because of course there are. You can read all about them in the official press release.

After leaking the existence of Crysis 3 on its own Origin service, Electronic Arts has publicly acknowledged the title. While the company isn't divulging any details, it told Joystiq, "The best kept secret in shooters just can't be contained." EA adds that we should "stay tuned for more information on April 16."

The game will reportedly take place in New York once again, according to Russian site MadFanboy (via CVG). The city has become "almost a jungle," apparently. Furthermore, Crysis 3 is reportedly set for a Spring 2013 release. Presumably, Nano Suits will also be involved. Whatever Crytek has in store, we'll find out next week.
