If he doesn't, then the way to unlock him is to beat the Subspace Emissary, and then beat classic mode with Link. There you go!

Hey, I think that Shiek is a good beginning character. Maybe it's just me but if you get in a jam, button mashing is a good saviour.
Zero suit Samus is also an easy character to use, in my opinion. Regular Samus is more of a medium character. Oh, and if you hold down a certain button while going to the stage select menu, you can start as zero suit.
