Following the schedule, today, the subject is Donkey Kong.
1st June - Mario 2nd June - Donkey Kong 3rd June - Link 4th June - Samus Aran 5th June - Kirby 6th June - Fox McCloud 7th June - Pikachu 8th June - Marth 9th June - Mr. Game & Watch 10th June - Luigi 11th June - Diddy Kong 12th June - Zelda and Sheik 13th June - Pit 14th June - Meta Knight 15th June - Falco Lombardi 16th June - Squirtle, Ivysaur, Charizard and Pokémon Trainer overall 17th June - Ike 18th June - Solid Snake 19th June - Peach 20th June - Yoshi 21st June - Ganondorf 22nd June - Ice Climbers 23rd June - King Dedede 24th June - Wolf O'Donnel 25th June - Lucario 26th June - Ness 27th June - Sonic 28th June - Bowser 29th June - Wario 30th June - Toon Link 1st July - R.O.B. 2nd July - Captain Olimar and Pikmin 3rd July - Captain Falcon 4th July - Jigglypuff 5th July - Lucas
So, we see this ape who easily turned over a new leaf, and settled down to live in the jungle and love the bananas. But we knew it was also epic back when he was into construction site mischief. Snake's codec also says that the Donkey Kong in the original game was actually DK's grandpa, but I don't like the remark.
Do you think he was nerfed or improved through Melee and Brawl? Is his destiny to be fail character, or has he improved enough to fit the latest generation? Do you believe that the Koopa Troop stealing his bananas in SSE wasn't a good idea? Do you think he still can bully foes at Multi-Man Brawl with his B-Down?
Like before, I'll let you say it first. _________________ My siggy is original. |

He was EPIC before and he is EPIC now.
Like, remember DK64? He had to travel to different islands to get to a level to take back his Golden Bananas. Could THIS game have been THE game to have him turn over a new leaf? It's also where DK got his Final Smash; the Bongo Drums. And now we have 4 instances in which we can actually play part of, or all of, the original Donkey Kong game [Arcade, DK64, GBA Retro series, SSBB]. |

I know that monkey, his name is Donkey
MONKEYS AREN'T DONKEYS!
Alright onwards. DK is a funny charecter, Completely underrated I must state out the gate. Great mix of speed, power and defense ( a common overlooked quality)
DK's Run speed is around average, surprising for his size. He is quicker than expected More accurately he is a heavy Middle weight ( besides setting the Bar for Heavyweight back in 64). Dk's Barrier can take among the most punishment. making him one of the best defensive choices out there. (good for shielding and counter attacking). Important to note DK's Attacks are Awkward, some quite hard to land(notably the Fickle Forward and Up smash). on top of that some of his attacks are painfully slow( to counter act his decent run). Though he can be knocked away from the stage moderately easy, His recovery is also an unexpected strenght. DK users need to be wary of his lack of range, as its an exploitable weakness. His Special Techniques are Basic and powerful, Each Have the weakness of being slow, and predictable, Users often are tempted to spam the ground pound, which is easily countered by simply attacking from a distance or in the air. A unique feature of DK, on top of his good throws he can pick up and carry foes and then throw them.( good for a cheap "walk off" KO) DK's final Smash is a mixed bag, A Rhythm based smash that might not be friendly for those who are tone deaf, At full power it covers a good amount of ground, notably can start some fun chain reactions with items on of course.
"Mainers" should master Timing and range with DK's Smash Attacks, As well as shield Techniques, and counter attacks out of the shielding. Mastering the aforementioned Awkward moves for their good pay outs. |

He's one of the few characters that remained almost unchanged from melee. And he received some nice buffs like his headbutt. A true DK main would focus on his headbutt+Giant Punch combo :) |

Either way, other thing the Dojo puts quite nicely is that he has potential Meteor Smashes. His B-Side is a rather fast one, and I can't think of any faster one. The danger is about edgeguards, since the B-Up can shuffle them out, but with luck only, as it's not very well ranged.
Also, what's the secret to hit his FS well? Usually I don't do it all that good, but somehow, I once managed to send one all the way off the stage. _________________ My siggy is original. |

DK...is my best character. After my one miricle match with MALAK where DK pulled off an amazing last-minute save, I knew...I knew that he HAD to be my main.
Donkey Kong is great. As far as Melee characters go, he's got an awesome range. His attacks, while some slow, are pretty devastating. And hey, if I learned how to hit with Dedede's forward smash, DK's is a nice breath of fresh air! The kong's got style, a nice gimping move, and an insane amount of recovery. With Brawl's new physics, DK's only upped in usefulness, since vertical recovery is now a bit less important than horizontal. Plus, his meteor smashes (all three of them) are all awesome in both damage and usefulness.
DK is a monster both on the ground and in the air. His one weakness, I guess, is that he has only one reflection move (the Hand Slap/Ground Pound), but that's countered by his good rolls, shield, and pretty long-lasting aerial dodge.
DK's final smash is sort of a one-trick pony. The first time you bring it out, if done correctly, some additional shockwaves could mean Underwhere for your opponents. However, once you do your first performance, it just gets more and more difficult to successfully pull off the move. I'd say it's one of the better final smashes, it certainly is very skill-based, but it's just not exactly a one-hit wonder.
Also, the bongos go at every quarter note, so counting "One-two-three-four, repeat" helps. IT also goes on for 20 quarter notes. On average I get 18 perfect.
And that is why DK should be president. ^^ |

Of the heavyweight characters, DK was always my favorite to play as in Melee (of course, now he's been replaced by Bowser...but that's another story). His attacks, while certainly not fast, aren't as slow as the other heavyweights.
In Brawl, he's been drastically improved. The addition of Super Armor frames during some of his attacks have done wonders for his durability, and some of his attacks are even faster, to boot. The only attack that I can say for sure has received a nerf is his down-special...it doesn't have the same punch that it did in Melee.
One of his main problems that hasn't been fixed, though, is his vulnerability during recovery. DK is completely vulnerable from above, allowing characters with meteor smashes such as Samus to kill him with relative ease (makes crushing rocks seem such a breeze...whoops, wrong thing!). |
