As we all know, most people will buy EVERY console game in existence, but once you mention a PC game, the first reaction is "Does it cost money?". And if you say yes, the result is usually along the lines of "CRAP!!! GET IT AWAY! I DO NOT HAVE ANY MONEY TO SPEND ON GAMES! I CANNOT BUY PC GAME!!! YEAAAAAAAAAAAUGH!!!".

And apart from a few select choices, most freeware games are pretty bad and are borderline shameful to play.

So let's help everyone out by providing links to quality freeware games that people can play and still have some dignity.

First up is Knytt. You basically go around an alien world exploring and searching for ship parts so you can go home. Very simple, very beautiful, very ambient. A must play.

Lyle in Cube Sector is a somewhat Metroid/vania clone about this little dude who throws cubes and stuff. Sounds lame as hell, but it's actually awesome.

Eternal Daughter is essentially another Metroid/vania knockoff with some really nice graphics and a rather decent story for a freeware game. It DOES get rather cheap at some points, but not overly so.

Cloud... a game so beautiful that if it does not bring a tear to your eye, you have no soul.

Chalk is cute, simple fun. You'll like it.

Synasthete is a must play. Absolutely beautiful.

La-Mulana: Tough but fair, and generally awesome. It was apparently a love-letter to old MSX games, so the graphics are meant to look old-school. The game is awesome though.

CaveStory is obvious. If you don't have it, go get it now.

Noitu Love is a platformer with a great story and interesting gameplay. Click the link. I swear you won't regret it.

Warning Forever: A boss-rush space shooter. Every time you kill it, it adapts to you. You keep playing until you fail to destroy the boss within the time limit. The boss gets daggum huge eventually; there inevitably comes a point where it's too large to fit on the screen, which is both good and bad (Good in that whatever turrets are off the screen can't shoot at you, bad in that you have little room to manuever).

Bunny Must Die is a must have if your computer is able to play Japanese games. The game and instructions are in Japanese, but it's still easy enough to pick up and play. And if you get stuck, just google for some translations or a walkthrough (the creator of the game is working on translating it, though) It's pretty much a Metroid/vania clone, only you can stop time and rapid fire flame arrow things. The visuals are amazing and the music is nice, so I suggest a play.

Syobon Action, an interesting Mario clone designed to be insanely difficult (nowhere NEAR the level of I Wanna Be the Guy, though). It'll throw some of the most random things at you, and because of the nostalgia, you'll find yourself laughing at some of the stuff they change instead of raging. Definitely worth at least looking at.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

So! If you know of anything good, give us a link and its description to so that this can make one singular list of good games that are legal to download online :D

(Also note that this is not a place to list off your favorite grinding MMORPG's... they're not unique, and they're only freeware to an extent if you don't buy into their microtransaction junk. So stuff like Maple Story or Flyff? This ain't the thread for it.)

I surf the net constantly for this kind of stuff, so expect to see more lists of amazing stuff as I see fit <3

As much as this sounds like spam...

There is only one path and that is the path that you take, but you can take more than one path.

For all the Vidmasters out there. Marathon is one of the greatest game series, EVER.

Here's a list of a bunch of my favorite Game Maker games:

The Cleaner: download link
you play as a mage on a rather ambiguous quest for revenge, SSSS-BLAM. your main powers are flight and telekinesis (is one enemy particularly annoying you? grab them and and hurl them against the ceiling until they stop shooting at you, and even longer if you'd like), and your choice of attack spell. its one of my favorite Game Maker games. Warning:brief suggestive image early in the game.

An Untitled Story: download link
"You're an egg. in a nest." who can move, jump, defeat bosses and collect powerups, apparently. most of the graphics are hand-drawn, SSSS-BLAM. This starts out as a pure exploration game, but it actually does pick up a storyline later on. there's also plenty of extras, like a house for you to buy and decorate with eveything from arcade games (with playable minigames) to a golden statue of your character. yeah, the egg does hatch at one point.

Pokebreed: non-direct download link
this is a surprisingly addictive game, even though all you do is, you guessed it, breed Pokemon. the objective is to breed teams for the Kanto gym leaders. Here's a hint: its really easy to get money if you buy a smoke absorber thing (it looks like a FLUDD nozzle) and one Koffing. the Koffing will evolve and eventually split into a ridiculous number of them, all spewing smoke into the absorber and netting you cash.

The Defender: non-direct download link
in this platformer, you play as a guy defending, uh, himself from lots of ghosts. you can get tons of upgrades, like a castle with other (invincible) people to help you, a better weapon, spells, health potions, stat increases, and other random abilities.

Phun:

Not really a game, per se, but it is freeware.

http://phun.cs.umu.se/wiki/Phun

It's a very nifty little Physics sandbox. It gets updated every month or so with new features.

It's a fun little thing, it's of course a major processor strain so you're computer needs to be decent to run it.

Banana Nababa
You take the role of Harry Flowerpower, and enter what is essentially a boss rush tower to defeat an evil within.

It comes in two versions, from what I see.

One has the normal game.

The other has an added boss, put in as a reference to a Let's Player.
