It is about time someone cleared this up, as some have the idea that hardcore means "blood and guts" whereas casual means "kiddy games."

That is not the case, as any "hardcore" gamer who claims that that definition is the correct one is misusing his terms. This post will contain all you need to know about casual and hardcore gaming.

Hardcore gamers consider games a form of art, play a variety of games from different genres, spend more time gaming than with any other media, and have a discriminating taste when it comes to gaming: analyzing the quality and features of a game thoroughly before making a decision on whether the game is good or not. Casual gamers don't appreciate games as an art form, don't play games very much, and don't care whether games are good or bad; to them, a videogame is just another type of toy.

As for casual and hardcore games, here are some examples of both:

Hardcore

The Legend of Zelda series, Bioshock, the Mario series, the Final Fantasy series, MMORPGs, the Call of Duty series, the Kirby series (As Kirby's gameplay is so traditional, casual gamers would have a hard time picking it up.)

Casual

The "Wii Series" of toy games, Buzztime Trivia, Spore, The Sims series, Sports Games

There is a distinctive difference between Casual and Hardcore gaming, and that is that those who make games for Casual gamers don't focus on quality very much: instead, they just trying to make simple toys; whereas games that are made for Hardcore gamers are usually longer-lasting, have higher quality standards, and higher production values. With that said, yes, some Casual gamer games can appeal to hardcore gamers, such as Spore, as they are of a high enough quality to be analyzed and remembered as truly sophisticated games. But, more likely than not, that was not the primary intent of those developing and marketing the casual games.

So, yes, there is a difference between casual and hardcore games. If you have anything to point out or add, then do so. However, basically, this is what the meanings of "hardcore" and "casual" are supposed to mean.

Casual games is a game people play casually, only when they're bored/want to do something with their friends, like Pong.

Hardcore games are games that people play 8 hours straight out of pure addiction.

Hardcore games are said to take "more skills and understanding" than casual games. Casual games are said to be pick-up-and-play. While this may be true, it doesn't mean that casual games can't be more fun than hardcore games. However, this isn't the definition of the word "casual", unless a "casual game" is meant for "casual people", in which case it should be called a...

Yup, but I hate it how a lot of people think that 'hardcore" games are sepia-toned FPS's, and everything else is a casual game. They should be exposed to the other genre's. Such people really cannot be called "hardcore", since they haven't been exposed to a variety of gaming genres.

SSBB is not hard. Tabuu isn't even all that hard on Intense. And hey, a casual gamer might be good at games. Generally casual gamers only play games for fun. They don't really care about anything else, they just want the game to be fun.

Depends on the way you look at it. I personally think it can be either or. You can easily play it competively or just once in a while for fun. I'd call Brawl both hardcore and casual.

Not really...Sure it's easy to pick up and not as hard as melee but that doesn't make it causal. =/

To all of you who think Brawl's casual, WRONG!!! Mad
Brawl is one of the games of the most popular series of all time. And for you who think it's easy, go into lv.9 and intense mode if possible and play. A casual friend of mine didn't like Brawl, that's enough provement for me to say this.

You could be a hardcore gamer that plays casual games; casual gamers don't usually play hardcore games or are passionate about the media of games, because, if they had those qualities, they would be closer to being "hardcore."

You can't be both hardcore and casual at the same time. Unless you have a split personality or something.

It may be popular, but it was dissapointing to me. Fighting Level 9 computers and intense on any modes are pretty much easy.

Brawl can be played casually. Sure, one can play it for hours on end, but it's also very pick-up-and-play, and it can be piss-easy. I don't think anyone was accusing it of being strictly for the casuals.
