Well, this applies to Americans, mostly... So Canadians beware! D:
Anyway, I was in class, and the announcements ask for everyone to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. Since I'm not too fond of our country at the moment (and because I'm not religious enough to believe in God), I haven't been standing.
Today, my art teacher yelled at the kids in the class that didn't stand. I think that she's totally in the wrong. What if some of those kids belonged to a religion that didn't pledge? And as for me, why should I stand for something that I'm not proud of at the moment?
She even said we should move to Iraq or Afghanistan and see how bad life is there. Well, I know how bad life is there. I respect the fact that we're trying to make it better. However, I don't respect the United State's actions to make things better.
Why should I be subject to punishment for expressing a right given to me?
Discuss this. Is it right to punish people that are simply showing their beliefs through simply not standing, and not reciting the pledge? |

Indeed.
Apparently a few of the teachers in my school get offended from it. My friend didn't stand, and the teacher pulled him out of class and yelled at him until she was crying.
A teacher crying over a student not standing for the pledge.

I blame the moral fags thinking that there moral beliefs are politically correct and everyone else is wrong who doesn't share these beliefs with them. Unfortunately thats society for you, your better just looking down on those types then attempting to argue with them. |

Like I said, there are some religions that aren't supposed to stand.
As for me: I've lost a lot of respect for this country, so why should I be frowned upon for expressing a belief. Also, I can make the effort to stand up. It's just that I don't want to. This country is going downhill, and how can I be proud of a nation that can't even save its own economy, or one that hides 9/10 of the actual stories from the war overseas? Why should I be proud of our country's past? Why should I proudly represent this nation, full of racism, sexism, and biased opinions the land over? |

Well, until a lot of problems are fixed, I can't say "I'm proud to be an American". Also, more about the pledge.
I'm not religious. I am agnostic. I don't believe in one "God". I have no feeling that this nation is "under God". So, another one of my beliefs is that if something annoys you, then avoid that thing. It's like someone coming to the doctor and saying "Doc, every time I punch my arm, it bruises." Well, what should the fix be? Simply stop punching the arm.
Can you see where I'm coming from at all? |

..The pledge isn't saying you're proud, it's saying you RESPECT America...
...That wether or not you like what the USA is doing, you respect them as your country...
...and as for the 9/10 thing...
...Find me a country that DOESN'T do that (they have to have more than 17 people as a population too)...
...Even FAMILIES don't tell their kids everything...

I honestly don't care about the pledge. I'm actually thinking about other things while "saying" the pledge ((Well, it usually involves Math, since I'm in Algebra at that time)). Its something I never cared about. I personally never liked pledging allegiance to a single nation. Yeah, I'm more of a cosmopolitan.
Now, onto the actual thing. The irony of it all, is that teachers yell at students for not pledging...in a democracy. Whatever happened to freedom of speech?
As well, there are a number of other ways to show respect for such a country. A list that extends beyond a twenty-second pledge.

...But why stand for the Anthem but not for the Pledge...
...It's not like it costs you to stand up, and if they are both just as equally rspectful, then why stand up for one and not the other, why don't you just not stand up for EITHER?...

Well, every time I've been at an event for the Anthem, I've either already been standing, or my parents make me stand... However, the National Anthem never once says "God", either. |
