This is one of the flaws in my school's one-quarter-long health class. They teach us abstinence only. It went something like this:

"Here's a powerpoint with some music to go along with some nasty pictures of STIs. The only way to know 100% that you won't get one of these infections is to not have sex."

And that's it. No talking about pregnancy, no talking about condoms or any other type of contraception, no talking about masturbation. That's it. Yes, abstinence is good, but people need to know about sex. They need to be educated.

Sure, abstinence is the only 100% sure way of not getting pregnant or not getting an STI, but condoms and the pill get pretty darn close to 100%, and if you have sex with only one person and they only have sex with you, and neither of you were born with an STI, then there is no way that you or your partner can get an STI.

They need to teach us about this stuff in school, because I'm sure that there are a whole lot of teenagers out there that aren't lucky enough to have parents like mine that actually tell me that if I want to have sex, they will buy me condoms and give me a podcast to listen to that says absolutely everything I would ever need to know on the subject because my school told me almost nothing about it.

Teaching abstinence only does not work. That's why we have so many teen pregnancies and so many teens with STIs. They truly don't know the first thing about sex.

um, what grade are you in? i'm pretty sure in health class they teach you a hell of a lot more than just "oh if you don't want to get STI's then don't have sex". either your school just sucks or you're not in high school yet.

How much do you want to bet that that class is funded by some conservative group of crusty old Christian fogies who haven't even so much as thought of sex in decades? Instead of teaching them that sex is the devil, why not just teach how to be careful and responsible? No matter what they try to say, they are eventually going to try it. Better off letting them know just what it is than trying to make it sound evil.

Teens are going to have sex. Simple as that. The only thing a school system can do is teach them safe practices and hope that they go through with them.

And that's what most of the people who create those sex ed classes say. Why not just teach all about it so people won't be stupid and not use a condom when they do break their oath of abstinence with the crazy person they meet at the bar.

But yeah, that is just stupid that they do that. I mean, just because it's a taboo and it's hard to talk about it. The best way to prove my point is to take that logic and swap it with somthing else. What if they did the same thing with drugs? Smoking and beer is bad. don't do it. It's bad. It would be more effective to say, Smoking and alcohol is very addictinve, you need to be carful or it can harm you body. every 3 minutes 2 people die from smoking. Alcohol can also effect you lungs.... ect. And they should know about safe sex and stuff like that too. Bah, that is just stupid that they do that.

That's just stupid. We need to be educating people about ALL things, not just what you want them to know. Schools are meant to help you learn, not make you more foolish in areas. I am severely disappointed in your school. It's time like these why I'm happy I teach myself things. Idiotic governmental system.

I think it is right to teach it because what if like they teach it and some girl in the class is a total slut doin' guys every other night. Maybe the program would help her to realize that what shes doing is dangerous. Maybe she still has sex but she stopped doing it often like that.

Well simply just talking about abstinence and how you shouldnt have sex before marriage, is stupid, they need to teach everything about it and teach teens what safe sex is. And deffinately what a condom is. :s
Thats what would help teens from getting diseases.

I can't believe how stupid this stuff is. People are going to have sex. It feels good for a reason. Who's going to win, some overzealous moron who says to never ever have sex, or THE COLLECTED SEX DRIVE OF ALL THE TEENAGERS THANKS TO OVER A BILLION YEARS OF EVOLUTION? It's a no-brainer. Teaching about protection would be helpful, but I had to find out from an outside source because my health program was decided by some idiot...

I had Health last year, since I wasn't there when I was in 8th grade. It's a semester long, and they teach about diseases and stouff.

And they also say that STDs suck.

My school has posters constantly being put up that literally have "ABSTINENCE" written on them, and a bunch of fake statistics (I'd know, because my English teacher is against the posters, and was at the meeting that was held). I found one on my locker one day. I tore it down and threw it away, and got a detention for it.

Thank God my English teacher loves me. She got me out of trouble.
