Quote: | Henry Allingham was the world's oldest man when he died today, but his mission late in life was to remind Great Britain of the sacrifices made by his generation of soldiers in World War I.
The account of his life linked to above, by the Guardian, describes Allingham's eight decades of refusal to discuss the war. He said he wanted to forget it. But a friend kept after him, and over time, as he met other veterans, he decided there was some value in remembering.
Once Allingham started talking, it became clear that the scenes he witnessed of soldiers waiting to go over the top at Ypres never left him. "They would just stand there in 2ft of water in mud-filled trenches, waiting to go forward," he said. "They knew what was coming. It was pathetic to see those men like that. I don't think they have ever got the admiration and respect they deserved."
He remembered spending a night in a shellhole in Flanders. "It stank," he said. "So did I when I fell into it. Arms and legs, dead rats, dead everything. Rotten flesh. Human guts. I couldn't get a bath for three or four months afterwards."
He was the last surviving founding member of the Royal Air Force, and of the Royal Naval Air Service. He was the last man alive who witnessed the Battle of Jutland, the only major naval battle of World War I. |
He's no celebrity, but he still died Summer of '09. *3* |

...103 isn't THAT old. My great-great aunt died 5 years ago when she was 106. I don't think she ever made it to the title of the World's Oldest Person.
Guess she got jipped. :/
I have spoken. |

I have spoken. | The oldest women in the world lived to be 116+. 106 doesn't come anywhere close. |

I have spoken. | The oldest women in the world lived to be 116+. 106 doesn't come anywhere close. | I'm talking about 103, not 106. I said that if there was, than this guy wouldn't have been the World's Oldest Man.
But either way, it turns out there was a typo in the linked article. I just read an article about it on Yahoo!, and he was 113, not 103.
[EDIT]Actually, it just turns out that I did the math wrong. :|[/EDIT]
Plus, the 116 year-old twins died, or else this 113-year-old man wouldn't have been the World's Oldest Man, it would have been the twins. And since they're dead, that nullifies the title.
I have spoken. |

there's a difference between oldest MAN and oldest WOMAN | The GWR says MAN even when it's a woman. All 3 of my GWR books where it's a woman still say MAN. And this guy was recognized by GWR.
I have spoken. |

I have spoken. | Then GWR has some gender issues when it comes to recognization. They need to fix that before a horde of angry women go up their assholes about it.

Yeah, he held the title, but when he died, he lost it, because... He wasn't alive anymore.
