It's kind of a long story. I have 150 dollars to fix my current PS3. BUT, Sony says the likelihood of the data remaining is very slim. (lolPS3pun) But there are some other options. My parents felt bad that they got me the PS3 for Christmas and that it broke so easily, so they're going to give me another $150 to pay for a new one. (probably, my dad said they'd probably do it, but they need to talk a little more) I'm going to list pros and cons (that matter to me, for example I'm not including Linux because I won't install Linux, anyway) about all 3 options, and I want your help in deciding on which to do. (please and thank you)
Key: Pro Con Neutral/Comment
Sending my Current PS3 in for repair: Saves my parents $150 Touch-based power/eject buttons (I like those) MIGHT have my data still on it MIGHT NOT have my data on it (if it doesn't, I can't move the data to my new one) Only a 40 GB HDD
Getting a new PS3: Touch-based power/eject buttons 60-80 GB HDD
Getting a PS3 Slim: Slimmer, Lighter, Smaller (I can actually bring it to places like Florida) More environmentally friendly (Also it won't run up the electric bill) 120 GB HDD Can't play PS2 games Push-based power/eject buttons
I'm thinking of getting a Slim, but I don't know 100% if my parents will ad their $150. |

Convert it into a game console/grill hybrid.

No, seriously though, guys. I want actualy help, I'm not going to drop it in a toilet, or throw it out. Although, if I could figure out how, I would definitely make it into a game console/grill. |

_██_ (ಠ_ృ) Wouldn't buying a new PS3 also mean you won't be able to play PS2 games? |

If he sent it in for repairs, though.
Most companies usually send you a new console when you send your broken one in, then fix it up and sell it. that's why there is only a chance of keeping HDD data, because if they can't retrieve it once they get your console, they won't bother transferring anything and wipe it clean when they finally fix it.
New console would likely mean one of the latest versions of the PS3fat, which would be missing more of the b/c than the earlier ones. |

I would get a new PS3.
1) Don't have to worry about shipping and waiting. 2) It is guaranteed to work. 3) You get a bigger harddrive ($50) 4) You get a new Dual-Shock controller ($50) 5) You can travel with it easier 6) Someone might buy your old PS3 on ebay for parts.
You are getting $100 worth of stuff for the extra $150 you are paying, so it's not that bad.
Also you can maybe recover your data yourself. Put your old PS3 harddrive in your new PS3, and if it works you can use the backup menu option to copy your data to a USB drive. Then put your new drive back in and restore. |

I suggest repairing it. Small hard drive or not, you can later change it on your own to something bigger. And if the data can be restored, then put it on a/the new hard drive. |

Ok, Francis has convinced me. If my parents chip in $150, I'm getting a PS3 Slim.
And M'aiq, what's b/c? (Sorry, I'm a nub, I know) |
