Why did people make achievements in the first place? Achievements in XBOX360 games, with the exception of a few games, do nothing at all. If we make these Achievements obtainable, then there's no reason for even having them because they're just something you can nerd-brag about, which is one of the most pathetic excuses for bragging I've ever heard of. If they allow specific features, people who don't want to bother with Achievements will complain that they can't get the same thing the people with Achievements get. In other words, all this will do is create one big "My e-penis is bigger than yours" contest, and said contests cause nothing but drama. Not supported. |

That's not the case with this achievement concept, however.
However, I will argue in favor of Xbox achievements: the reason people like them is because competition is fun. You don't have to participate if you don't think competiton is fun (Plenty of people do think it is fun, though. And there is nothing pathetic about believing that life without competition is boring.)

I don't see why they should complain. Any intelligent member would realize that to purchase these special items they would have to unlock APs, and they should understand that if they don't want to work towards achievements, they have nothing to complain about, because it was their choice to not participate. If they decide to leave the site because of that, well, it's better off if they leave, anyway; we don't need people without any common sense polluting our site.
Plus, it should be notable that the achievements (If they are added) would be made so that each could be obtained by anyone, if they worked toward them. Therefore, if a member were to argue "Well, I just can't get any achievements; it isn't fair!" his arguement would be automatically null and void.

As I stated earlier, adding a little competition back to the site would help restore dead features such as the battle system and the arcade. Sure, if you don't like the idea of a little fun competition, you wouldn't have to participate. |

How would the achievement system recognize achievements already accomplished by someone? Like, how would it recognize that someone met the standard beforehand?
...Or would you have to start all over? |

I assume that Francis would find it easier for the achievements to start fresh if he implements the system (Maybe, if you were to PM him with a legitimate reason for why an achievement that you have met the requirements before the system was implemented should be unlocked, he could unlock it?)
Either way, the achievements would be designed so that- no matter who you are or how long you've been on the site- it is still possible for them to be unlocked (If you work for them, of course. They wouldn't be too easy.  )

Not all people are competitive. You might enjoy little kids shouting "NOOB" and "FAGGOT" into their mics during a TDM in Halo 3, but I don't. In fact, it is because of all this damned competition and "I have this Achievement so I'm better than you" that has made me detest online gaming as a whole. However, there are still a few games with online that I enjoy. One of which is Phantasy Star Online. There's no competition unless you count racing to a corpse to pick up the dropped items first. It's all about people helping eachother by trading items, working together against the monsters and bosses, and socializing. The only gloating you can really do is show off your MAGs and rare weapons, and even then hardly anyone cares. As far as I remember, it has no PvP, unless it is in offline mode with another player on the same console. Another example is GTAIV. Sure you can argue that you can race often, among other things, but the main thing people do online in GTAIV is dick around, which has always been the point of GTA: Dick around and have fun.
Oh, and one last thing: your idea is yet another flavor-of-the-month idea. If it takes off, it'll last about 3 months, then die because everyone's got all the Achievements and nobody cares who has what, because it won't change anyone's opinion on the person. If the person is an asshole in their eyes, they're still an asshole even with all those achievements. To them, they're just sprinkles on a pile of dog shit.

I like the idea of achievements as a tool to encourage users to explore different parts of the site. I would avoid anything that rewards "grinding"

That's a good idea. I like the way it looks, and it even says how many people achieved it.
If we could have something like this, it would be great. Although, I think for every achievement, there should be a representing image. |

Competition doesn't automatically encourage stupidity. And- as I stated- not all people are stuck up about competition, either. The fact of the matter is, plenty of people enjoy it, and if you don't, you wouldn't have to participate.

Just because you don't like friendly competition doesn't mean everyone doesn't.

More personal tastes. Read the part where I stated that you wouldn't have to participate if you didn't want to.
However, it isn't like some of the achievements don't require you to work together. For instance, the achievement that I listed where you have to defeat a boss requires plenty of teamwork. It isn't all just "I kill you and you kill me;" the point is to achieve something, because achieving something is fun.

The achievements will be designed so that more will be added over time.
Plus, they will be actual achievements. Even the examples in my first post would be incredibly hard for everyone to achieve in three months.

Nobody's arguing that achievements will make idiots look intelligent. Achievements could be something personal, to see if you can challenge yourself and fulfill that challenge. It's also fun, in the eyes of many.

Of course, but your arguement does nothing to logically show that achievements shouldn't be added. You're arguing that achievements shouldn't be added by just stating your personal tastes, as if they account for everyone (And the fact that competition is fun in the eyes of many proves that your opinion doesn't account for everyone.)
The fact of the matter is, people enjoy competition. If they didn't, popular events like the Olympics (Or any sport or contest in the world) wouldn't exist. And, if you don't happen to enjoy competition, you don't have to participate. |

You're not just stating your opinion; you're acting as if your opinion accounts for everyone, and that because of your opinion alone, a fun new feature that plenty of other people think would be a great addition shouldn't be added.
If you're going to say that someone is wrong, prepare for an arguement in return.
