I giggled at that
Terrible! Just terrible~! |

From what I can tell, oscars are like dogs. You have to give hem attention and play with them and make sure they always have something or someone to play with. Ping pong balls apparently make great toys for them.
If you raise an oscar well though, it can be taught tricks. Yeah, that's right, TRICKS. Some people teach them to do barrel rolls. Some teach them to do flips. Some teach them to go through hoops. If you get the oscar used to you early on, it will even let you pet him/her.
If you don't raise it well... It will become a devil of a fish that WILL scare you whenever you try to feed it. It will attack you like a pitbull. It will bite you with its toothless mouth. It will give you nightmares. |

I was originally going to get two different koi. As I was holding the bag they were in, I began to notice that they were moving rather violently. They kept bumping the sides of the bag rather hard. I asked the guy who put them in the bag about it, but he didn't think it was something to worry about. When they died before I even got to pay for them was when I found out that he had forgotten to put in the conditioner for the fish. One of those two that died was the only black and gold colored koi they had. At least I didn't ave to pay for those two.

Did he put them in completely different water? The water they were in already should have been fine. Bizarre. |

I found out something new about koi. They like to dig... I've had to replant the live plants I got for them plenty of times. I'm currently wondering how long it'll be until one of them decides to bury the penny that's in their tank.
Also, I have been trying to train Yin and Yang to allow me to pet and hand-feed them. The process I've been using to do this involves having my hand in the tank with them while I give them their food so that they will get used to me. Yang just seems to ignore me most of the time, but will occasionally get rather close to my hand. Yin however, has finally come up to my hand today and tried nibbling on part of my palm. I find that to be a big step towards training Yin to eat food from my hand.
There is one problem that I'm having with training Yang though. I just have trouble with wanting to pet him at the moment. It's not that he's disgusting or anything. It's that he has two bruises. He has one on the left side of his tail and another right next to his right gill. While looking at him from above, I end up having trouble remembering which side has which bruise, so I end up trying to avoid pet him because I don't want to hurt the little guy by touching one of those bruises. OK, so they may not be bruises, but I'm not so good with medical terms being applied to fish. Yang just has two pinkish areas that weren't there before he left the other koi at Petsmart.
So some things that I plan to do when I got enough money... 1. Get the little pirates in training a treasure chest. 2. Get some fish food that isn't flaky and has less density than water. It's hard to hand-feed a fish when the only food you got for them is a bunch of flakes that float. 3. Get another piece of bamboo for the tank. The bamboo seems to stay in place more easily than the other plants. 4. Get a bell to use when I'm about to feed the koi. |

When I was 3, we had a fish called Goldy. We fed it the wrong food and it died of food poisoning a week after we got it. I miss Goldy... Oh, and if you put a female fish in a male's tank, the male will attempt to kill the female. Just so you know.(I read a VERY useful book on fish habits a couple weeks ago) |
