I like how alot of the characters moves have a reference to previous games.
Dedede's side running A,for example,is derived from a move in the Kirby games where he tries to tackle Kirby. |

You want references, try G&W. I've played almost all the games that his moves are from. God those are great. |

G&W HIMSELF is a reference.
Another example,though this is definately stretching it,is Luigi's Negative Zone. After Luigi's Mansion,he is always associated with the paranormal. |

I think you are completely correct in that assumption. I think Nintendo is trying to reconnect him with his paranormal side, at least in SBB. This is evident in several circumstances, including his level being Luigi's Mansion and his entrance in which he floats out of a pipe speaking in a slighly creepy manner.
I actually love the new personality he has been given in this game, and I hope Nintendo keeps it. For too long he has been just a taller Mario, albeit very cowardly. |
