They don't work at all, and in certain cases, prolong your negativity. Try to focus on happy memories, or nostalgic objects, since they are bound to overwhelm you with pleasure from a time prior to your depression. ... how can you talk if you have never had the experience?

It is true that many antidepressants make you feel more suicidal, but this usually happens when you are in the mode where you're so depressed that you really want to kill yourself but you're just too sad and tired to do it. When you first use an antidepressant, it picks you up a little bit, so you feel motivated, but then it doesn't pick you up enough to make you not want to kill yourself. In that short window of time, maybe a week to two weeks, when you're motivated but still suicidal... people usually attempt it then.
BUT if you are at the point where you a) have already done self-harm, and/or have already attempted your life, or b) haven't thought of suicide yet and are just feeling sad, then it shouldn't do this.

Also, remember there are many different KINDS of antidepressants. Sometimes it takes a long, long time before you find the one that works for you. Sometimes years. But you talk to your doctor, find a good psychopharmacologist. Try something. Use it for a bit.
- If it makes you feel more suicidal, call your doctor and/or 911 right away. When you get over that particular episode, have your psychopharmacologist pick you something else to try.
- If you've used it for about two months and you feel like it isn't doing anything positive OR negative, then once again, make an appointment and find something else to try.

But always keep trying. The first thing I use made my suicidal thoughts increase, and I took a serious attempt on my life that would have worked if one great friend of mine had not called an ambulance. Then they put me on Zoloft and Desyrel, and they worked well for a few years, then kind of gave out. I told them when the meds stopped working and I felt depressed again, and so they fiddled with the meds for a bit; first they tried decreasing the Zoloft, then increasing it, then adding Wellbutrin, then taking the Wellbutrin away, then increasing the Desyrel, then putting some of the Wellbutrin back.
After about a month of mixed feelings, I finally found another combination that worked. And chances are, in a few years from now, I'll have to get them to change the mix again, when the mix I have right now stops working. But after a few more trials, I'll get another combination that works for a few years, and so on. As one's body changes, the meds that work for you change, but because there are so many KINDS of meds there is bound to be one that will work for you.

(Another tip is to beware of generic brand. Generic brand is actually VERY substandard to the brand-names, and VERY likely to increase suicidal problems because its standards are not as high for some reason.)

But don't sit around thinking happy thoughts. Because it may not go away. If you work hard, and work with your doctor, you can control it, and live a normal and happy life, but it still will not go away. It is a massive hassle to deal with, all through your life. But you will only get your moments where everything works for you, IF YOU DEAL WITH IT. Not if you try to pretend it isn't there.

I've never taken antidepressants (Never been THAT depressed), but don't most of them just work on the Placebo effect?

They have to do even just 1% better than the placebo in tests in order to pass and be distributed. So, many of them may not be much more effective than a placebo, but they are always at least a bit more effective than a placebo.

Personally, when I was taking the Zoloft, it worked okay, and then I was switched to generic brand (which has LOTS of things wrong with it) and I thought it was the same stuff. Therefore, by the placebo effect, I should be fine, right? Nope. After being on the generic brand a few days, I totally lost it, I ran outside my house and lay down in the middle of the snowy icy lawn and sobbed and screamed. o___O

I was stuck in major depression for about a couple months. I talked to people about it, and I slowly started to feel better. I guess you have to talk about it, and express how and why you feel the way you do. You... have to get it off your chest.

But, its different for all people.
