The upcoming update for PS3, coming July 2nd, features two big features:
In-game XMB (XMB is the main system menu). This will let you do things without leaving a game... like see who is online, read and send messages, play your own music off the hard drive, configure settings, and switch to another game.

It also adds Trophies, which is basically the same thing as Achievements. Supported games will list out all possible goals, and as complete them you earn trophies. You can also view your friend's profile and see what they have accomplished.

Check out the linked videos to see it in action. I don't have an XBox, so I'm not sure how this stuff compares, but as a PS3 owner I think this is a great update and I'm glad Sony keeps adding new features. |

Hey as all the consoles become identical, then that will just build more reason for a One-Console world. Then everyone can just focus on making games instead of what little features one console has over the other. |

Oh yes. Yes.
No longer will I be caught up in the "which version should I buy" problem when it comes to achievements vs. no achievements; in fact, now I probably won't have to worry about getting a new 360, as most of the awesome stuff on the 360 will probably be on the PS3 as well.

Ahhh...once again Sony takes something that it's competiters have, make a better version of it and claim it as Orignal. Shame on you Sony shame on you! But yeah I do agree with what Francis said with the one console thing that we can just focus on making games. |

While its great that they keep adding new features, the big problem with these udpdates is that a lot of old games won't take advantage of these new features (unless they are patched). It gives you the feeling that you bought games for an older console.
Dual Shock 3 - old games have no rumble
Trophies - old games have none, and even they do, you probably have to go back and replay everything.
Custom in-game music - not in old games
Voice-chat - some games support it, some dont, because voice isnt standard across all games and PS3 doesnt come witih a headset.
Home - I doubt old games will integrate with it in any way that is anything special
Kudos to Xbox for getting everything there from the start, which forces all games to take advantage of it all. |

More reason to buy a PS3. I wonder how Nintendo's going to respond to this, though... let's face it, WFC sucks, and now it's not just the bottom of the barrel, it's obsolete. Brawl could have been MUCH better if Nintendo had a decent online setup. |
