In the second star of the Space Junk Galaxy, on the second to last Airship, where you start on top of the Pillar, and there is a goomba near you and a "?" block, and next to the fire-breathing things are 4 star bits on one side, and you can only really get 3 on the other, what you must do is grab the 7 star bits, and the 8 from the "?" block, ignore the goomba, it takes too much time to kill, and grab the pull star over the smoke pillar, and drop into it, and there are 40 star bits there. Die, and because you got 50 star bits (and then some), you got an extra life, and it starts you on the pillar again, so you get easy star bits!

Here's the best way to make starbits easy. Instead of touching a starbit with Mario, just point your Wiimote at it and it'll come directly to you.

Try this one place called the Sling Galaxy or something like that, it's accessed by a hungry luma at the observatory, its one of the first ones. Just keep getting a ton and purposely dying to make more appear. You get over 100 so you get 2 lives every time you lose 1 and you can keep doing that until you get 9999!(at which point all coconuts turn into watermelons)

I usually get 50 starbits halfway into a level. So I really dont need this. Like brak said I just use the wiimote. Really easy to get starbits then.
