http://www.friendcodes.com/forums/news-and-notes/98826-sony-and-microsoft-to-drop-out.html
| Quote: | Sony is not the company they use to be and the Playstation 3 is a market failure. Sony will never recover the billions they lost on the current generation of consoles. Sony says we’re not making another for ten years, which is code for we can never make back the billions we lost on PS3, let alone convince our executives to make one again.
Microsoft has a hole mile deep dug in the middle of Microsoft’s Campus to bury the billion dollars of broken Xbox 360’s they’ve got. The Xbox business is not a profitable business for them. It’s only become incrementally profitable for them after many years, and billions invested. To give you some perspective the Xbox 360, which is the second most popular console in the U.S; All Xbox revenues combined; create less revenue than World of Warcraft subscriptions. The entire 360 software business is minuscule compared to one PC game.
So the interesting observation, is that both Microsoft and Sony are in a position where they’re unlikely to ever have the motive to invest the billions into making another generation of consoles. |
Well, shit... this is either really really bad news or somewhat good news. If Nintendo has nobody to compete against... either gaming will FAIL, or an amazing console will be released.
Let's hope for the latter. |

So, Nintendo triumphs over the gaming world again? I only wonder which companies will step in this time. |

If this is true, then Nintendo had better get off its ass and give us something good.
I mean, look on the shelves of your local gaming store and tell me how many of those Wii or DS games you would buy. |

If they fail, then that means Jak & Daxter might end up going multi-console, unless the series is already finished. That, and Rare will go back to Nintendo's grips, and we might see a Pokémon Ranch game with fur shading, and Pikachu would look so realistically cute that it's scary enough to make you wanna cuddle with Dot Warner. |

This is terrible news, if true.
Monopolies are, without exception, BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD.
...Except the board game. |

Son of a bitch, this means that Nintendo won't be able to pick up the slack and actually release something decent in order to play awesome games. We're going to be stuck with *crag* MOTION CENSOR AND TOUCH SCREEN BULLSHIT after this gen of consoles without any decent games you play with a regular controller. And god knows Nintendo won't invest in firepower for their next console and make it as strong as the PS2. |

Ok, I TOLD my parent 3 YEARS AGO to buy stock in Nintendo. this was back when everyone was selling their stock, right before the Wii came out, and right after the DS came out. I TOLD them, but they wouldn't listen. Now, after me telling them all of this, about the new DS and Sony and Microsoft dropping out of gaming, all they can think of is how stupid they were not to listen to me. |

| When did they say that? All I remember them saying is that all their consoles have a ten year life-span. |

So, yeah. Either:
Nintendo will lose all motivation to make a good console with nobody to compete against, or
Nintendo will release an awesome console in an attempt to capture the fallen players.
Hopefully, it's the latter. |

I have to agree this is definitely something that could go both ways.
If Nintendo can make a super awesome console, then hey, we're set.
If they can't, then the gaming market will be for casuals only and thus result in the gaming apocalypse. |

Maybe some new developer will pop up and make the best console ever. Or maybe Nintendo will have a change of heart about the whole casuals thing.
Unlikely. :( |

Come on people... DO NOT BELIEVE THE INTERNETS
You linked to a forum that linked to a blog that linked to another blog that quoted the CEO of Wild Tangent. Yes, Wild Tangent.. the company that makes cheap little online games. OF COURSE he is going to say that consoles are dying, when his business thrives off cheap PC games. He knows nothing about the console market. |
