Ah yes, the "alternate route." In Tyranos-speak, that means we're traveling into the 7th circle of HELL.

Legacies of Dondoran is an extremely long RPG Maker 2003 game made back in mid-2007. It has a seemingly complex skill tree...

...that's actually pretty easy to get ahold of. Everyone in your party shares roughly the same skill tree with a few variations, so most skills can be learned by everyone, but not everyone's good at them.

It uses a real-time battle system that can be switched to regular turn-based. The turn-based system is better IMHO; in the real-time system, enemies attack even while you're menu-scrolling, and I HATE that.

It has a lot of very interesting gameplay elements- take, for example, the Siege of Favorian early on in the game, which is where I am now. The first part has you making tactical decisions for your troops that determine what you do next. I ended up taking on the huge cannons to the east. I had 6 minutes to cross a wasteland filled with barbed wire that hut me when I step on it and a bunch of easy troops to get to the large cannons and the people working them, whom I had to get rid of. Then I fought a boss and got back to the castle.
The next part is already one of my favourite moments in gaming history, and I haven't even beaten it yet. Your 4-man party is split into 2 groups, both with 2 extra soldiers with their own skills to fill the 2 slots. You can switch between groups at will to hold back the invaders. There are a number of soldiers marching toward the castle, and you have to kill them by activating a battle and winning, and if they reach the castle steps, it's game over. There are a few pots scattered around town that fully heal you and then disappear, and standing at the top of the castle steps slowly heals you.

And that's only as far as I am; I'm sure there are plenty more interesting uses of events like that. It's free, doesn't need a good computer to run on, and it's an excellent game for anybody who likes RPGs, so it's definitely worth your time. YOU WILL NEED THE RPG MAKER 2003 RUNTIME PACKAGE, WHICH YOU CAN GET HERE.
I could have necro'd the freeware thread, but I felt this deserved its own.

Wow.....that's a pretty complex skill tree you it has. Are you sure it's simple?
