Summary: Does Guitar Hero World Tour win the Battle of the Bands? Or is it just a second rate Garage Band?
Opening Comments: Guitar Hero World Tour, is a new take on the classic Guitar Hero franchise. In addition to playing the guitar and bass, drums and vocals are added as well. Now, don't necessarily say GH:WT is a Rock Band rip-off. There are quite a few differences. Let's go through some of them.
Gameplay: The objective of Guitar Hero games has you trying to hit colored gems at exactly the right time, to create the illusion of playing a guitar... or bass... or drums... and vocals... you get the idea. Now, this part of the game actually works good. I haven't found any gamebreaking glitches yet... The drum set works better than RB's, is sturdier, and doesn't cost $300. There are 3 pads, 2 cymbals, and a bass pedal. The cymbals are a particularly nice addition to the drums, as it adds to the realism one feels. Also, beware, the drums may have hold notes... The vocals aren't any different than RB's, so if you've sung that, this should be familiar ground. The new guitar is new. An added slide strip makes playing most solos a breeze, as well as adding sound effects to held notes. It's also a bit larger, and isn't as crappy as RB's... but most people agreed that RB's guitar sucked, so lets leave it at that. Also, note that bass has a sixth color, purple, signifying open string (Strum without pressing any buttons.) and that the guitar introduces a new mechanic (I can't explain it here, as it is hard to).
Features: Ah yes, the features. GH:WT introduces some cool new ones. Like in RB, you can design your own character, and customize them in any way you see fit. Change head size, eye size, and everything else. GH:WT also has a cool new Music Studio. You can create and record your own songs for use in the Quickplay/Career Modes. Take some time to learn the mechanics, and you'll be a real musician in no time... The best feature, however, is the ability to BUILD YOUR OWN GUITAR! Choose the body, neck, strings, design, pickups, knobs, and bridges. The same applies for bass. The drums have options, but not quite as many. You only get two options to change the mic (Microphone, and Mic Stand). It's still cool nonetheless.
Songs: GH:WT has over 9000 80 songs. The songs are as follows...
-- 311 - "Beautiful Disaster" -- 30 Seconds To Mars - "The Kill" -- Airbourne - "Too Much Too Young" -- The Allman Brothers Band - "Ramblin' Man" -- Anouk - "Good God" -- The Answer - "Never Too Late" -- At The Drive-In - "One Armed Scissor" -- Beastie Boys - "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" -- Beatsteaks - "Hail to the Freaks" -- Billy Idol - "Rebel Yell" -- Black Label Society - "Stillborn" -- Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - "Weapon of Choice" -- blink-182 - "Dammit" -- Blondie - "One Way or Another" -- Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - "Hollywood Nights" -- Bon Jovi - "Livin' On A Prayer" -- Bullet For My Valentine - "Scream Aim Fire" -- Coldplay - "Shiver" -- Creedence Clearwater Revival - "Up Around The Bend" -- The Cult - "Love Removal Machine" -- Dinosaur Jr. - "Feel The Pain" -- The Doors - "Love Me Two Times" -- Dream Theater - "Pull Me Under" -- The Eagles - "Hotel California" -- The Enemy - "Aggro" -- Filter - "Hey Man, Nice Shot" -- Fleetwood Mac - "Go Your Own Way" -- Foo Fighters - "Everlong" -- The Guess Who - "American Woman" -- Hush Puppies - "You're Gonna Say Yeah!" -- Interpol - "Obstacle 1" -- Jane's Addiction - "Mountain Song" -- Jimi Hendrix - "Purple Haze (Live)" -- Jimi Hendrix - "The Wind Cries Mary" -- Jimmy Eat World - "The Middle" -- Joe Satriani - "Satch Boogie" -- Kent - "Vinternoll2" -- Korn - "Freak On A Leash" -- Lacuna Coil - "Our Truth" -- Lenny Kravitz - "Are You Gonna Go My Way" -- Linkin Park - "What I've Done" -- The Living End - "Prisoner of Society" -- Los Lobos - "La Bamba" -- Lost Prophets - "Rooftops (A Liberation Broadcast)" -- Lynyrd Skynyrd - "Sweet Home Alabama (Live)" -- Mars Volta - "L'Via L'Viaquez" -- MC5's Wayne Kramer - "Kick Out The Jams" -- Metallica - "Trapped Under Ice" -- Michael Jackson - "Beat It" -- Modest Mouse - "Float On" -- Motorhead - "Overkill" -- Muse - "Assassin" -- Negramaro - "Nuvole e Lenzuola" -- Nirvana - "About a Girl (Unplugged)" -- No Doubt - "Spiderwebs" -- NOFX - "Soul Doubt" -- Oasis - "Some Might Say" -- Ozzy Osbourne - "Crazy Train" -- Ozzy Osbourne - "Mr. Crowley" -- Paramore - "Misery Business" -- Pat Benatar - "Heartbreaker" -- R.E.M. - "The One I Love" -- Radio Futura - "Escuela De Calor" -- Rise Against - "Re-Education Through Labor" -- Sex Pistols - "Pretty Vacant" -- Silversun Pickups - "Lazy Eye" -- Smashing Pumpkins - "Today" -- Steely Dan - "Do It Again" -- Steve Miller Band - "The Joker" -- Sting - "Demolition Man (Live)" -- The Stone Roses - "Love Spreads" -- Stuck In The Sound - "Toy Boy" -- Sublime - "Santeria" -- Survivor - "Eye of the Tiger" -- System of a Down - "B.Y.O.B." -- Ted Nugent - "Stranglehold" -- Ted Nugent's Original Guitar Duel Recording -- Tokio Hotel - "Monsoon" -- Tool - "Parabola" -- Tool - "Schism" -- Tool - "Vicarious" -- Trust - "Antisocial" -- Van Halen - "Hot For Teacher" -- Willie Nelson - "On The Road Again" -- Wings - "Band on the Run" -- Zakk Wylde's Original Guitar Duel Recording
That's quite a few. Although a handful of them come from RB, they are charted differently, so it's still a new experience. Obvious greats are Van Halen, Eagles, Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica, and Michael Jackson. Other not so greats are Survivor (Why the *crag* is Eye of the Tiger here?), Sting (come on, we understand what you mean after the 5th time saying it), Interpol, and Pat Benetar. The setlist is pretty good overall.
Multiplayer: Just like RB's... Everyone designs their own character, and then you jam out. I don't think any further explanation is needed.
Closing Comments: GH:WT is better than RB in a lot of ways, but RB is better than GH:WT in a lot of ways. It comes down to which you prefer, but I recommend GH:WT for the hardcore group, and RB for the more casual group. But that's just my opinion. Get whichever you want (or both if you can), and have fun with it. It's a great game. BUY IT NOW!

Neversoft has been going to hell. The recent Tony Hawk games have had a spike in false difficulty, and Guitar Hero is only is shadow of what it used to be IMO. M'aiq hears that the custimization is subpar, and the music creater is pretty much "meh". Guitar Hero should stay Guitar Hero, honestly.
Besides, rumor is that Rock Band is getting The Beatles. |
