The DS follows the Golden Mean.
The Golden Mean is, basically, a rectangle whose length and width have a ratio of (1 + square root of 5)/2.
The measurements of my DS (the original model) came up as roughly 15 cm and 9 cm.
15/9=1.6666666... Estimation: 1.67
The Golden Mean is 1.61803399
So, roughly, the DS follows the Golden Mean. Which is also true of human torsos, many packaging cartons (usually cigarette and juice boxes), cards, ect. |

Huh, I've always been taught it as the 'Golden Ratio'. That's like with the shape of paper and stuff, right?
Apparently, it's the most easy-on-the-eye, or most pleasing, type of rectangle. |

Interesting information. Not exactly profound.
Though I'd like to point out that it is indeed called the golden ratio more often than the golden mean. The golden mean is a philosophical term, meaning the middle of two extremes, and has nothing to do with numbers.
Edit: I apologize, I re-read my post and it came off as a bit rude and sort of... posh, I guess. I don't want to sound like a college professor or anything weird like that.

My math teacher kept switching between Mean and Ratio.
Anyway...
Ocelot: Sorta.
Gills: Only if you want it to.
Elzilcho: Typical printer paper is 8.5" by 11" (roughly a 1.29 ratio).
Jenimoi: Again, she kept switching the term.
Gills: They probably did, or perhaps it was just chance. In any case, it is physically appealing to people because, without knowing the Golden Ratio, most people in the class preferred the rectangle depicted which turned out to follow that ratio (one liked the 1.25" x 2", but that's beside the point). I'm not saying that the class represented everyone in the planet, but it was diverse enough to show that most people are likely to choose something which follows the Golden Ratio.
Its essentially a marketing scheme. Intentionally or subconsciously, the DS follows the Golden Ratio and thus is more appealing in shape. I suppose the DSLite is more appealing due to its slimmer form, but I think it is roughly the same length and width (but definitely not the same depth). |
