I'm working on a concept for an online Mario game.

The concept will be turned into the basis for a comic. The comic's plot depends heavily on in-'game' mechanics and imagined plots. But first comes the concept.

I am currently not sure of what species are available as playable characters yet, but I know that at least the Koopas and Boos are. As for areas, they are more concrete in accessibility, but Subcon will be quite a unique area in its availability.

Here's a little information I jotted up on the Boos. Decided some things would work out better, both in this little project and in my fic-verse, if the rulers... well, just read.

The Boo Bloc (Temporary Name)
The Boos are a reclusive kind. Boos’ innate abilities are simple, yet quite effective: pass through solid objects, turn invisible, manipulate many earthly things at once and (of course) possession. Wary of the living and fearful of the sun, they prefer the safety and solitude that only Boo Mansions can give. Actually, any place that’s dimly lit and has the right atmosphere will do. There are some Boos who prefer to live in musty old forests or harsh, forbidding wastelands. Many of their homes are difficult to find, or otherwise are protected by the very areas they are situated in and/or perhaps a fair amount of warding spells. Contrary to what he has led many Living to believe, King Boo is not the ruler of all Boos. He is but one lord among many. For example, Lady Bow is the supervisor of many of the Boo Mansions within the Mushroom Kingdom.

Some of the areas the 'players' will access will be:

Mushroom Kingdom and the Dark Land Koopa Kingdom.
Yoshi Island (which is a territory of Mushroom Kingdom, but likely where 'players' could get their own Yoshi to assist them in their travels - regardless of whether or not Yoshi are players).
Sarasaland is a maybe.
Bean Bean Kingdom (if only for Fawful mayhem).
Boo Bloc (ie: a fair number of Boo Mansions, but most are "difficult to find").
The Waffle Kingdom is only a possibility because of various areas described in the 'books' would make for great multiplayer arenas or simply fun events to watch.
Maybe Sammer’s Kingdom, not sure about this.
Definitely Smithy's Factory. Dilapidated, but potentially harmful if only by debris.
And of course, Subcon is accessible for at least one quest, but visuals show up if character is tired. >3

I'm being schooled for making games, so I know a little bit about concepts and the like.

I like your concept. But, some more technical information would be useful. How will the game be controlled, how does the interface work, how does the player look at the world, how customizable is your character ...

Try to make a clear list for yourself when it comes to plans about characters and areas. Divide them in groups:

Will Certainly Be Used ( With these ideas, you pretty much start out. Beginning areas, the most basic of characters, and so on. )

Will Probably Be Used ( These ideas will become of use once you have ground to stand on. You finished the basics, and now it's time to see how to improve the whole. That's where most of these ideas will be used. )

Might Be Used ( After you finish your game, you may want to expand it later. An idea you put on the shelf, like a new character or area may renew or improve a game's popularity after a while. Ideas might also be placed here because they're difficult to execute and will need more skill. )

A basic concept is 1 or 2 pages long, describing in full what makes your game tick.

Don't be put down by my long list of critique and advise. As I said, I like your concept. But that's why I would love to see it expanded.

Beanbean Kingdom is an ABSOLUTE yes that you need. You should also do

Rogueport
Forest Maze (a.k.a. Geno's Woods)
The Bitlands (Just for Digi)
A Galaxy from SMG
Delfino Plaza

You could make Rogueport so that you need to get all the crooks in it, and Delfino Plaza so that it's ben infested with Cataquacks, or something.

There shall be no Bitlands. Not unless there was an "expansion back".

Some specific areas are not mentioned because it was in a portion of one of the larger areas.

There will be no Galaxies, sadly. Perhaps other planets/planetoids/things in the Grand Finale Galaxy, but nothing beyond.

I'm still working on this, but I forgot to type up the basic ideas I had about gameplay.

It doesn't need to be TOO too deep. It's just hypothetical for the sake of a comic, after all, but I agree that it should be realistic to a degree.
It sounds good from my limited perspective, but I don't know much of the actual science behind game design, so I can't really give you a professional opinion or anything.
