Your Unseen Friend

I am your unseen friend,
the beast under your bed.
The shadows in the night
and your fears keep me fed.

I know how swiftly you can run,
all the places you go to hide.
But do not fear me child,
for long ago I died.

"Treason" the people said
was why they sought me dead.
Yet all I did was sell some things
So I could buy some bread.

No noose was set about my neck.
No blade within my heart.
The way they deemed was "just" for me
was for my head to part.

Luckless in life yet when I died,
They said "Hell is almost full."
So they gave me a choice betwixt,
Revenge made me a fool!

So here I am, a shade of man.
And I now live to fright.
I hide within these walls and then
I scare you when it's night.

My lot in life was dire,
Far more than I can tell.
Yet every day I wonder,
If I escaped from Hell.
