I'm almost 17 and still have never had a real job. I'm doing volunteer work right now, but it's for a tiny independent business that will probably never be able to afford to actually pay me. I'm applying at places, but I haven't heard anything back yet. The last time I called somewhere to ask if they'd looked at my application yet, I was told that they weren't going to interview me because I'm inexperienced. Even though the work I'm doing now is exactly the same as the work I'd be doing for them.
I've been reading the Times. Two days in a row, they had articles about how hard it is for teens to get jobs right now, since they're competing with laid off 20/30-somethings. One quote from some manager someplace said, "A 17-year-old might need money, but not as much as a 27-year-old with kids needs it." Plus, they'd rather hire someone with experience than some dumb kid who wants to make a quick buck.
I see the logic, but it's really discouraging. |
