It's because in the original Japanese games Mr. Mime's name had no gender connotation to it, but in the Americanized versions of the games it did. This wasn't a problem at first since R/B/Y had no gender (excluding the Nidorans), but this became awkward afterwards.
Oh well.

It sucks how they never fixed that gender confusion, but I guess they didn't have a reason to in japan.
There are some other Pokemon that seem weird as different genders. Lopunny looks female. I'm at least glad they fixed Gardevoir, sorta. |
