Hudson wrote: | First Xbox Live® Arcade, then WiiWare and finally the PC! Distributing Bomberman Worldwide: The Emphasis is on Online Play
New online Bomberman to be offered for the PC in the summer of 2008. Distribution will start in Japan and then expand to Asia, North America, and Europe. Hudson is also planning a worldwide tournaments, with champions gathered from all over the globe.
Hudson Soft Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and Representative Director: Hidetoshi Endo) is focusing on the globalization of Bomberman, its popular video game console and mobile phone offering, with a new emphasis on online play.
In July of 2007, Hudson Soft, through its wholly owned North American subsidiary, Hudson Entertainment, Inc., launched the worldwide release of Bomberman Live. The title is for the Xbox LIVE® Arcade service of Xbox 360®, and has 8-person online multiplayer capability. In the little over two months since its debut, more than 200 thousand copies of the game have been downloaded.
Hudson Soft also plans to offer more online multiplayer fun in the form of Bomberman (tentative title) for WiiWareTM, a new service that will be introduced by Nintendo Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Kyoto-shi, Kyoto; Director and President: Satoru Iwata) for the Wii® game console in March of 2008. This title will have a mainly multiplayer focus as well.
Finally, in the summer of 2008, Hudson Soft will kick off a new online Bomberman service for the PC, starting in Japan and subsequently expanding to Asia, North America, and Europe. A worldwide tournaments are being planned to determine the number-one Bomberman champion of the world, with competitors gathered from elimination tournaments to be conducted in each area. In the future, Hudson Soft intends to adapt this Bomberman competition system to other games as well, and to host a variety of such worldwide tournaments.
Bomberman Loved in over 45 Countries around the World The popular Bomberman is Hudson Soft’s flagship game, with over 60 iterations on nearly every video game console. More than 10 million units have been sold in the series since the first Bomberman title went on the market in Japan in 1985 for the Nintendo Family Computer (known as the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America). Hudson Soft also distributes Bomberman-series content for the four major mobile phone carrier services in Japan: i-mode®, EZweb, Yahoo! Keitai and WILLCOM, the brand’s popularity generating over 7.2 million downloads. Online Bomberman for the PC also provided an enjoyable battleground for more than one million users (the site was closed in July of 2007).
The Bomberman brand has been firmly established in the overseas market as well. Since the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in 1987, titles have been sold for a variety of home console systems throughout North America, Europe and elsewhere, and Bomberman Live for Xbox Live® Arcade is now being appreciated by users in North America and all over the world.
Hudson Soft also distributes Bomberman for mobile phones in more than 45 countries around the globe. In Europe, Bomberman has ranked in the top-ten charts of several leading carriers since its mobile-phone debut in November of 2003. By January 2006, Bomberman exceeded the one million paid downloads mark, and has now gained wide support among players in Europe as one of the most popular mobile games.
Still the Ultimate Party Game after a Quarter of a Century The simplicity of the game system and rules (dropping bombs to knock out opponents) and the sheer strategic challenge of the original Nintendo Family Computer Bomberman made it a huge hit that sold nearly a million copies. In the beginning, the game was limited to single-player play, but multiplayer battle mode was also later introduced. This party-atmosphere aspect proved so popular that “multiplayer” came to be regarded as synonymous with “Bomberman,” and the game has been loved by a great number of users as a fun family game and party game ever since.
In keeping with the changing times, Bomberman has been offered through a variety of different platforms—from home game consoles to mobile phones to online PC games. Even today, a quarter of a century after Bomberman’s debut, the simplicity of the game system and rules remains the same. It is that simplicity—a straightforwardness that makes it easy for anyone anywhere to pick it up and start a battle—that is the secret to Bomberman’s enduring popularity.
