Ruki's guide to Snake(Digibutter Arcade):

Ruki Motomiya(at the time of writing, High Score holder), here! I figured that some people might want to learn how to play Snake better, so here's my guide.

Ah yes, Snake. A classic, as anyone would say. Pretty much, you go around a recangular board collecting dots to get a high score.

CONTROLS:
Arrow Keys move you. That's it.

LEVELS:

Slug: The slowest level. Odds are, it's too slow. I know of almost no people who play this level.
Worm: My recommended level, faster then Slug but slower then Python. With good reflexes, you should be able to easy use corners and things to your advantage.
Python: The "other" good level. Unless you have great reflexes, stick with Worm. However, this level is quite fast. If you can control it, it's good.

THE STRATEGIES:

Follow the dot: Obviously, this strategy is simply following the dot. Not recommended.
Square dotting: Well, this is what I call it. Pretty much, TRY TO MOVE IN A SQUARE PATTERN while your collecting the dots. Until you get to 1,500+, your tail will disappear much faster then your head will get there. This allows you to easily turn out of your square and into where the dot is. At higher levels, you will have to add zigzags so you don't hit your tail.

TIPS AND HINTS:

More coins: This only works if your good. Pretty much, get ahead of the current weekly highscore by only a dot or two and continue this until either they can't match you or you can't match them. Each time you get a weekly highscore by beating said person by a dot, it's 10 coins.

PRACTICE CORNERS! How you ask? Simple, take some time and simply turn corners in a practice sessions. Do this repeatedly until you have it down pat.

Learn the timing of when your tail disappears, this will help lower the time needed to collect the dots by knowing when you can turn towards your tail and not hit it(because it disappeared!).

Don't be afraid to get RIGHT next to yourself, as long as you don't turn into yourself your fine. Practice getting next to yourself the same way you practice corners.

HISTORY OF SNAKE(skippable):

Snake came out in the mid 1970s(The Snake variety originated in the arcade game Hustle, made in 1977), while an early(possibly the first) home microcomputer version of Snae was programmed in 1979 by F. Seger on the TRS-80 Computer and soon a version for the commodore VIC-20 computer version called Worms.

Some better-known versions include the Neopets example, which is known as Meerca Chase(Which has been scrapped for Meerca Chase II). Another variant is Nibbles, which was included with MS-DOS for a time.

An analog joystick-controlled variant of Snake, called Anaconda, was included as a hidden minigame in TimeSplitters 2.

Awesome write up. The version I have here is probably the simplest Snake game there is.

My favorite version is Pizza Worm.

You were not locked into a grid, you could turn at any angle. It just "felt right". I may add a similar flash version.. but is two Snake games one too many?
