The internet. Wonderful thing, is it not? It was originally created for the exchange of data and information between long distances at high speeds. Little did anyone know what it would eventually be for.

First off, there are three evils to the internet. Anonymity, No Social Barriers, and of course, Imitation. I will go in reverse order.

Imitation is just as it sounds. Little kids are on the internet, folks. Kids easily susceptible to a variety of things. Now I'm not talking about three year olds... I'm talking about anyone ages eighteen and under, really. Until you finish puberty, you have so many hormones bouncing around in your body, you find a nice little nest in indecision... but the internet can crawl in there with you and say "hey buddy, I think you might want to be a bit more certain about things... y'know? Sexuality, religion, political standpoints... don't take your time, bud, there are things to do!"

Not saying that being a homosexual catholic who supports President Bush is WRONG... but that's not what you are. You're persuaded to BE that.

Next: No social barriers. Now of course it has it's good points... but there are still serious problems. So many ideas have come together, collaborated, that so many new ideas have surfaced that we wouldn't have even thought POSSIBLE.

Another problem is what is right and what is wrong. Hm. Before the internet, things were much easier. If it was right, it's right, if it was wrong it was wrong. Religion and government dictated these things and everyone listened. Now everything is debatable. Everyone is wanting to rebel against law and rule, and everyone has their own niche as well.

For example... if you're a puppy strangler... before the internet, you were a sick freak, and if you spoke out that you liked to strangle puppies, you were a horrible person. You were isolated and alone, and you knew your idea was wrong. Now with the age of the internet, that's not nearly as big of a problem. You can find a site with at least one thousand other puppy stranglers, and you suddenly get the idea that your puppy strangling is not wrong. It's NORMAL. You feel comforted by this large community, and your morality is blurred ever so slightly. This can happen with so many other points of views, as well.

Last: Anonymity. It speaks for itself. In reality, if you call somebody a nasty name, you may end up with a black eye. On the wonderful internet, you can call someone a name, and all they can do is PRETEND to hurt you. A person on the internet suddenly has anonymity, and in turn, an almost unlimited amount of freedom. Things you would never want tacked to your name, you can now do, because they WON'T be tacked to your face and name.

But freedom is not so amazing. In fact, if everyone in the world has freedom... nobody can have freedom. Your right to free speech can be hindered by somebody else's right to shut you up, and then one of you is no longer free. Even then, if anyone is given even a little bit of freedom, they'll go rather far with it. Given the freedom to a gun, you'll shoot somebody, even if you don't have the freedom to murder.

But the thing is... the internet is much more dangerous than any gun.

Thank you for reading. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

I agree in some ways. I believe it is just horribly misused, and that the internet itself isn't dangerous, it's the people controlling it.

Well of course. People are dangerous. Anything we touch becomes a weapon of some sort... we just have to figure out how to use it. It turns out that sometimes we don't even have to do that. We can inadvertently cause chaos by merely being intelligent enough to know what right-click does. It strikes me as odd that such a simple thing as connecting computers can go this far.

It's because computers have unlimited potential.

Yes, they do. People see into the future and see nothing but good, but in some cases, optimism is simply not the best course of action.

We can make computers that automatically moniter everything in our body, but what most scientists see past is human nature, and how humans will react to this. For example, I don't think anyone on the world could have predicted that in ten years, the internet would go from a single website to google, wikipedia, and myspace...

It's because scientists are short sighted in certain ways.

I actually want to go into psychology or philosophy of some sort before I head off to become a writer. Can you tell... >_>;

Anyway... I seriously believe that if you think too practically, you fail to remember what humanity is capable -- and for that matter, incapable -- of. With all of the different personalities in the world besides yours, there's no way to be able to create ANYTHING without displeasing SOMEBODY... and your only hope is that at least fifty-one percent of the people are not displeased, and if there is a crazy social war, the fight will be on your side.

Then get some damn good grades so you can go to college and do that. Or write a novel that earns you enough money to go. Or both.

Yeah, especially with science. There is always religious zealots and horror sci-fi movies to get into your way.

troofax.
It's almost scary to think what technological innovation leads to.
