When Mario Kart got big, there was a flood of Mario Kart rip offs: Crash, Pac Man, Sonic, Konami...
Same with Mario Party: Crash, Pac Man, Sonic...
So where are the Smash Bros game clones?
Qualifications would be:
Characters from different games/media
At least 4 players
Stages with platforms
Jump Ultimate Stars is the only one I can think of. Marvel vs Capcom was close, but it was still just a standard fighter.
I wouldn't mind seeing some good competition. Smash Bros is not just popular because it's Nintendo characters. The formula would work for other publishers too.

Madden, The Sims, James Bond, C&C, Crysis, Godfather, Harry Potter, Rock Band, The Simpsons
Square Smash?

Square and Capcom by far have the most authority to do it. Square has the fanbase and Capcom already has hundreds of stock fighting characters.
Also the Jump games were made by Nintendo, so does that really count? |

Square should make one; the Final Fantasy series and others are legendary enough to qualify. Of course, there is Dissidia, but it is completely unlike Smash Bros. in several aspects. I can't think of a true Smash Bros. clone. |

I think Sega needs to take a go at it if anyone. It has the most decent characters.

They don't really need to rip off Smash Bros. I mean, Inafune is gonna be making a MegaMan game on the Wii, called "MegaMan Scramble Battle," which might be a MultiSeries Crossover Battle game, featuring ALL Forms of MegaMan, Star Force. Battle Network, X, Zero, and Classic, just to name a few. |
