She got off the bus at the stop nearest to the bridge. Cars whizzed past her as she walked to the center on the side walk. The drivers didn't know her, didn't care about her. She was simply a pedestrian in crazy clothes.

The second she had gotten off the bus, tears started to form in her eyes. She held herself both against the blustering wind and against falling apart more than she was already. Just wait, you'll be truly in pieces soon enough, she thought to herself, sobbing quietly.

The most striking thing about her appearance was her outfit. Her mismatched clothes were once bright and colorful, though now dirt encrusted and torn. It seemed like everything she wore was costume clothing from several different performances. From her rainbow toned tights to her metallic tutu and paisley print tunic top, she could have been a glowing beacon of hues if it were not for her disposition and state of uncleanliness.

She smelled like the streets the bus was buzzing by on, her seemingly once beautiful and luscious hair matted and tangled with all sorts of debris. Her face was dirty and unkept, with only tear stains showing some of her original skin tone. She had pulled her legs up, tightly seated in a ball while rocking herself.

The businessman on the bus had just finished his cell phone call once the woman had gotten on. She threw the payment into the driver's pay box, and sat down next to him. The businessman took a quick look over her, and became uneasy and worried, not for himself, but her.

She left the alley she had been sleeping in for the past week. Today was the day of reckoning, the whole reason she had started this ordeal.

Back at her apartment, she went to the superintendent's office. "It's the day," she simply said, and handed over the key to her now empty living space. The old man smiled at her through his thick reading glasses, and continued looking over the business section of the paper. They had previously discussed this day, and he knew she was moving out. However, she had no new place to go, nor did she intend to stay that long anywhere else. The woman exited his office, and turned her back on her home for the past several years.

The single box that was left was not hard to carry. It had been filled to the brim, but the items inside were light and few. Other items that reminded her of him could be used by someone else, so she had given them away. She walked to the bus station on the corner, went to the recycling station, and asked to have her box incinerated. It was taken from her quickly, and she left without a word, leaving a ten dollar bill behind.

Going outside with her wallet, she found some people who were willing to work for a bit of money. She didn't care if her items were taken, they were going away anyway. The woman led them upstairs, and asked to help move them all, except the one in the corner, to the closest Salvation Army location. Afterwards, she gave each of them an equal share of most of what was in her wallet, about eighty three dollars each. Wide-eyed and surprised, they left before she could change her mind.

The final box was packed. The sound of packaging tape being pulled over a cardboard box was finally ended, and she dropped the scissors. This last one was not going to charity; no one else in the world needed what was inside this. Everything else had material value that someone could use. She pushed the large U-Haul box to the corner against the heater. Her apartment seemed so much smaller without her items scattered all over the place.
