Panasonic has designed a plasma TV which it reckons will withstand the force of a fiercely flung Wii Remote.

The TV’s display surface can absorb a hit packing up to four Joules of kinetic energy, thanks to a special transparent coating sprayed on the screen.

Wow, I never knew this was such a big problem? Combine young children (or drunk college students) with a game that requires flinging your arms around towards your new fancy flat panel TV, and we have a new niche market!

The company isn’t the first to come up with a Wii-centric TV protection innovation, though. One Taiwanese manufacturer has already designed a specialist LCD TV Wii shield that likewise protects your telly from flying Wii Remotes.

The Wii shield is a little obtrusive - Panasonic's Wii-proof telly has the benefit that it's indistinguishable from any other flat-panel display.

In 2003, the US-based owner of a 42in Plasma TV suffered a nasty shock when his three-year-old son smashed up his TV’s display with a Wii Remote, because he didn’t win a game of Wii Sports Tennis.

Panasonic hasn't released any pricing and availability details for its Wii-proof TV.

Drunk college students actually did something good for someone for once... other than certain other "tapes." Shifty

I think he was more in shock that his time travelling three year old used his amazing powers just to play Wii Sports earlier.

what're you talkin about, we do great things all the time like...uhhh...well there's...damnit!

But yeah I figured after the first few cases including that woman who flung her wii remote through her flat screen that people learned to use the wrist strap. Being accident prone however I support all durability improvements.

It's just too bad that no wrist strap can hold you back from losing a game in strikers. But they need a baseball bat proof tv.

Dads get mad when their team loses at football.

The wrist strap isn't PERFECT.

You can ask me.

I broke a $1500 TV because the wrist strap snapped during Wii Sports. I'm serious, it wasn't even that hard of a swing, but it still broke the plasma. I was really freaked out, the strap just... snapped... I was using it correctly and all.
