I'm kind of neutral on Blue Sky Studios. They're not awful like Dreamworks, but not incredible like Pixar. But I was convinced that their most recent film, Horton Hears a Who, would suck.
That face. That *crag* face. Why does every character in every CGI film ever (except for Pixar films) have that face? I was sure that this movie would just be one pop culture reference after another, loosely tied together by a children's story. But yesterday, I watched the movie, and was pleasantly surprised. It was good. Not great, but definitely better than the Shrek series.
First of all, the CGI is fantastic. I recommend watching it just for that. You know those fuzzy trees that appear in nearly every Dr. Seuss book? They were pretty much the best part of the whole film. They looked so soft, and the way they moved in the wind was amazing. Just admiring the backgrounds and the way the characters move kept me entertained. There was even a bit that was 2-dimensional. I would give the animation a perfect 10, but they really overused that one expression that I hate. 9/10
The acting is pretty good for the most part. HHaW has an all-star cast, meaning there's no one we haven't heard before. I don't think Jim Carrey was really a good choice for Horton, and none of the voices really stood out at me, but they get the job done. A couple of lines felt kind of forced, though. 6/10
The writing still feels very Dr. Seuss-like. Of course, they had to add some filler to make the film long enough, but it was done pretty well. There are a few pop-culture references, (WhoSpace. Get it, it's like MySpace but with Who's!) but no where near as many as some Dreamworks movies. 7/10
Overall: 7.5/10 Not something I'd want to buy, but if you're an animation fan I recommend watching it at least once.

Well, if Jim Carrey was able to pull off the Grinch easily, he managed to make it with Horton. Speaking of the Grinch, did you know that the Grinch was created by Dr. Seuss, as was the two Horton stories? Who am I kidding? Of course you know that, it's pretty common for anyone who read his works. |

Your remark about "The face" amused me.
I have not seen this movie yet, but I probably will eventually. |
