In a interview with Gamespot about Mario Kart for Wii, George Harrison of Nintendo said "More than you can count on a couple of hands," when asked about how many people would be able to play online. Though the exact number is not confirmed, if this holds true we could be playing with way more than 8 players.

I'm believing more and more now that the Medal of Honor thirty-two player online is true...
MKWii will probably have 16 players, since that's pretty much the standard for more than eight. |

Ya but the DS only had 4 so he could have meant 8. This confirms over 8. |

More than 8 players online?! That's awesome! ...But I hope that they don't limit us to choose only SOME of the tracks in online mode, like they did in Mario Kart DS |

At least, it would be if Diddy Kong Racing DS wasn't so messed up. |

Diddy Kong Racing DS screwed up my DS. The moisture from my breath caused an internal manfunction, and now the touch screen thinks that I'm always pushing the bottom lefthand corner of the screen (you won't believe how many Pokemon I've accidently caught because of that) |

If it's still covered under warranty, it's no big. But if you at least remove the Sticker that it had, then you'll end up paying a hefty sum of $82.50! |

It's not really Diddy Kong that screwed it up, it's your breath! |
