I have the urge to write a review about, in my opinion, one of the most epic and breath-taking games ever released: Super Mario RPG. I shall begin.
The first thing you would probably notice about the game is the graphics. They're actually 3D, making it the most graphically superior game to appear on the SNES. The second element in the game you'd next notice is...it doesn't play like Mario! But this is really a bad thing, because it uses a turn-based system, which works so well that you'll learn to love it instantly.
The story is very good. You're Mario and about to have the final showdown against Bowser to save the Princess, when suddenly a giant sword crashes into Bowser's castle scattering the hero, the damsel, and the villain in different directions. You're the left on your own to right all the wrongs, more of which you discover through out the game. The introduction of new one-shot characters Geno and Mallow add more depth and mystery into the game. From beginning to end, all the mysteries slowly come together, and the satisfaction for defeating the perfect-difficulty final boss Smithy is overwhelmingly great.
Gameplay works like a charm. It's turnbased, as I said, but it adds a twist. You can used "timed hits" and "timed defence", which is when you press a button or do a command at a certain time and do extra damage or take less damage. Customizing your characters is also very flexible and fun to do. You can buy new weapons and armor at shops, but throughout the game there are secret weapons that are more powerful both early on and late in the game. It adds mystery, depth, and strategy to the game. There are several accessories to put on your characters, too, that can make you resist certain effects and even some attacks.
The music is just fantastic. There are so many catchy tunes in the game, you'll get some stuck in your head for hours! No kidding, there isn't one annoying musical track in the game. It's just very satisfying.
This is in my top 10 games of all time, which are pretty much all tied for best game ever because I can't make up my mind I'll always come back to this game because it's a classic game that'll be stuck in my mind forever. |

In my opnion the game hasn't aged well. It was fantastic for it's time, and is still a great game, it is just no where near the masterpiece people refer to it as. In that respect though, it was one of the best RPGs on the SNES, just not the best RPG ever.
Also I have the original cartridge, you kids what be usin' that VC ain't school like da mastah. |

Personally, I prefer the air the graphical system in Donkey Kong Country 2-3. It just seemed a bit more realistic and fluid. Though I will admit that many of the attack animations and general characteristics (AXEM RANGERS!) were excellent.
The amount of satire for other media was pretty good, too (AXEM RANGERS!).
This review is pretty good, great analysis of the game overall. I haven't played it in 10 years, so my memory of the game is limited to the title screen being scary and constant losses to Knife and Grate Guy (I was, like, four, how do you expect me to beat an RPG that isn't Pokemon? >.>).
Overall, SMRPG was a good game, and this is a good review of it. Nothing more I can say, except SMRPG is just a wonderful turn-based RPG, and nostalgia along could carry the game, but it's wonderful engine and engrossing characters make it raise above the rest. Well, most of the rest... |
