Quote: | Contemplating life... is like a ladder.
You can start at the bottom, with the easy rungs. You can contemplate the far more easily understood things, such as how a watering hose works. With this method, you'll never reach the top. You'll see it, oh yes, you'll see it, but you'll never quite make it to the top.
You can start at the top, contemplating the more difficult things, such as how the universe came to be, how the earth came to be, etc. Eventually you'll find out you're climbing upside down, and will either fall off in attempting to reverse yourself and start climbing back up, or will reach the bottom, bump your head, fall off the ladder, and the ladder will fall down and kill you.
Or you can do it just right, contemplate the right things, figure out the answers to life, and reach the top of the ladder... but with this method, eventually you'll figure out the ladder was lying flat on the ground, and you've really accomplished nothing in all your contemplating, and you'll end up going insane.
How do we know so much, then, if everyone who climbs the ladder dies or goes insane? Well... they shout to the fools at the bottom of the ladder, passing on what knowledge they've learned as they climbed. The knowledge accumulates, yes, but still nobody reaches the top. I doubt it's even possible, actually, to understand EVERYTHING. |
It all makes sense now... I don't know how I didn't see it before. :/ The second I read this... wow...
