Everytime I open up certain programs, Firefox closes itself and then I have to redownload it. WTF?

What type of virus software do you have? Sometimes, if you have Norton, it tends to not work very well with Firefox. Also, have you tried using Firefox's safemode? See if that helps, and if the problem keeps occurring.

I use Norton Internet Security 2007 and never have a problem with Firefox.
