The way that the school system is set up in my state, and probably most everywhere, is one of the things that I dislike. I’m quite fine studying Math, History, etc, but I don’t plan on using it anywhere in my life. The elementary years, will give us the basic knowledge of most of what we need in life, but I’m not going to use anything that I learned in Geometry and a few other subjects. Especially since I want to become a surgeon, I’ll have to spend four more years learning subjects that aren’t even associated with the career I’m interested in. I will probably be in college for about ten years.
I’ve got a small problem with the elementary schools, and the problem is, that I’ve been basically taught the same principles and subjects in those years. Barely anything has changed. I feel that high school subjects should be made somewhat easier, and be brought down to elementary school. (There will be three types of levels of studies in the elementary school: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced.)
When a person enters high school, they will have the choice of choosing all of their subjects related to their field of work, that they wish to pursue. There will be no “core” subjects for them. Though, students who have not had any ideas of a career will be given two electives and five different classes (they can be changed for three electives and four classes of their choice), as we have now, to help decide what career they want.
Then, colleges will be only specialized in certain fields where people, will be able to do better in those colleges, because they were better trained in their careers that they wished to pursue. If there are people who haven’t thought of a career, there would be certain colleges that specialize in many fields and would see which career interested the person. (This type of college would probably be a 1-3 year college) and they can then go to the college that they desire. |

I believe a lot of it is to keep a wide range. To use a common example, what happens if a football player doesn't make it big? He struggles through the rest of life. I think it is simply to give a wide range of subjects, just in case. |

Congratulation, you win the Noble Peace Prize from me... xD seriously, this is what a lot of people have been thinking, where will we ever use High School education? Whats the point of high school? High school is where we reach the point where we think about our future, and if, for instance, you want to be a doctor, we should have medical courses only in high school. If an athlete, you should only take Physical Education, not any other subjects etc. |

THANK YOU. I've always said they should save the complicated stuff for when you choose that line of work. I mean, I know I don't need to know how to make rocket fuel or fullerenes if I want to write fantasy or make games. |

Seeing how we live in the same underfunded, joke of a state, I'm sure Troopa knows all about what I would say about the school system. I agree 100%. |

I'm from a country where the education is even more crap, and I'll tell you, you guys are making plenty of misassumptions.
School shouldn't teach you only to do your occupation, but your life, too. Personally, I think that they go too much in-depth into some unecessary things like advanced maths and chiemstry, but come on, language classes are about 80% useful, dammit. The only drawback is the sintax classes, but otherwise, you learn the very useful art of literature more and more. History? It's not crap. It's essential for us to know what we've been to know what we are and how we can be better. And phylosophy(sp?), too? What our damned world needs the most nowadays is people who think.
Sadly, it's not like our governments are going to ever listen up. Education in my country will still continue to be a mere preparation for the mock exams. Education in your country will still have a lot of stuff you don't need taking the place of stuff you do need. |
