Well, my whole "Best Music Remix" thing in the Brawl forum got me thinking: music is often reused in sequels. Sometimes, this can be a good thing; for those who have played the game where the music originated from, it may give them a sense of "holy shit, I know that tune!". Of course, for those who HAVEN'T played the original game, all they'll hear is another song...

On the other hand, remixing music from a previous game may rob it of what made it so special in the first place. One example that I can give you of this is the Hunters song from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, which is a remix of the Jungle Brinstar theme from Super Metroid. The original song was moody, yet at the same time hauntingly beautiful, while the remix took away everything that gave it personality.

Another thing that remixing songs do is give the series a set of songs that define it. While The Legend of Zelda's main theme is, of course, immediately recognizable, many other songs have become definitive of the series, such as the Hyrule Castle Theme (A Link to the Past) and Zelda's Lullaby (Ocarina of Time).

So, what do you think? Does remixing music help or harm a series? What are some of your favorite and least favorite remixes?

Favorite Remixes, eh? I like the Brawl remixes, and I'm a big fan of the Remixed Mario music in Galaxy.

It makes the series more recognizable. Just look at the theme for Super Mario Bros. Whistle it on the street and more than half the people listening will recognize it.

But just how many remixes of the Mario main theme do we need? There comes a time when it gets tiresome listening to the same music over and over again.

It REALLY depends on the remix.

Examples from Brawl:

Luigi's Mansion Theme
Castle / Fortress Boss Theme
Forest Map
K. Rool's Theme / Ship Deck 2
Jungle Level
Delfino Plaza Medley

These were great remixes. Such nostalgia from them.

Ocarina of Time Medley

This SUCKED!

I also like the SMG music remixes. All of them.

I agree with that. I find myself groaning every time I hear the ditty playing in newer games. But it still serves an important role: novelty.

I couldn't have put it any simpler. Some songs sound better remixed to me, others, I'd really prefer the OST.

I, for one, loved the Ocarina of Time medley. It wasn't the best, but I still like it. The immense nostalgia it creates and the incorporation of almost every ocarina song in the game.

On the other hand, I hate Castle/Boss Fortress with a passion. Something about it... just makes me not like it.

Of course, people have different opinions. But you don't need to say bluntly that something sucks unless it's a complete piece of crap that nobody in their right might would like.

You could simply say something like "But this song, I really don't like." and it would prove the point you had even more.

Yeah, you're right. It's actually pretty good, but they could have done some songs more like the original. The more I listen to it, the more I like it.

Also, I'd really like to know what remixes you like ASIDE from the Brawl music. Because, to be perfectly honest with you, that's kind of a given. =P

I like the Metal Gear Saga remix of the MGS3 theme in Guns of the Patriots. Metal Gear Solid is another series that does Remixes extremely well.

I liked the way Sonic Adventure remixed the two songs from Sonic 3D Blast, yeah.

It really depends how it's remixed. Sometimes the remix is perfect in bringing the mood and nostalgia, and other times it ruins the whole feeling of the song and simply makes the original song feel repetitive.
