Modes

Blitz – Make it to the portal on the enemy’s spawn point.
Cranked – Kill enemies before the timer ends. Each kill restarts the timer.

Free-for-All – Every man for himself. First player to 30 kills is the winner.

"Let me start with how we used to define Final Fantasy. When the games consoles were almost everything that mattered, in those days we aimed to make the most out of the specs of the popular consoles to be able to offer cutting edge, supreme gaming experiences to our users. That was what we were looking for.

Since then though, I think the environment in which gamers play has experienced quite a drastic change. Now, we need games angled towards more casual gamers as well as those for more high-end players, like Lightning Returns. But what all these different types of Final Fantasy games have in common is that they offer players deep and engaging immersion in a fantasy setting. That’s what we always think of when we’re creating a new Final Fantasy."

PN: When converting Super Ubie Land from HTML5 to C#, do you just go line by line and plug in the assets?

BEN: Due to the nature of Construct — the program we used to make Super Ubie Land — most of the automated features have to be re-coded. For the assets, I can reuse numbers like coordinates or animation speeds, but a lot has to be reworked too. It involves some experimenting to create formulas to convert numbers to a different system and still output the same thing.

PN: Every programmer out there knows that sometimes programming “goes wrong,” and you can spend hours troubleshooting a problem. Since the HTML5 code already exists for SUL, do you find that you run into fewer problems, or is converting the code just as troublesome as writing the code from scratch?

BEN: Porting a game can take less time than making a game from scratch, but there are just as many complications when converting code or writing it from scratch. I would say there are more complications for the Wii U version than the original because the automatic features we relied on for the original game are no longer there. We are also using a more advanced computer program than before, so it naturally takes more work.

Snow Moto Racing 3D is an alright game that provides a small racing fix for anyone desperately in need of one. The visual presentation, level design, and local multiplayer make it a fun rump, but plenty of humps interrupt the fun.

Hackers continue to amaze me with the amount of work they put into learning the inner-workings of games. Today those hackers have turned their attention to Pokemon X/Y in order to learn about digital Pokemon DNA. Here's what the crew has come up recently.

- Box pkxs are now 232 bytes, as opposed to 136 previously
- Pkxs store the current owner + the original OT for a given pokemon
- The encryption on the pkx files works slightly differently
- Hatched eggs save the moves they hatched with separately for the move relearner

EDGE: What’s next for Animal Crossing? Can you keep adding more to the current template, or are you thinking of making wider changes?

KE: We have already started thinking about what to do next, but there is no concrete direction yet. First, we need to decide which hardware to develop a new Animal Crossing for, and then we want to use that hardware and find out what it’s capable of and what kind of features it provides. Then we can start thinking of elements of Animal Crossing and how we can realise them using the hardware. So until we discover these new inventions, we will not decide the direction.

OXM: Players can give feedback on story missions. What will you do with that information?

JSD: Firstly there's the context. You're now a researcher for Abstergo in the present day, so you're giving a rating to the research you've just performed. For the rest, getting closer to players, getting a feeling for how they react as you play, is more and more important. We spend a lot of time during development playtesting the game, with a lot of people from outside Ubisoft, and we also track a lot of data when the game is released. We thought it was nice to have something that is apparent, that is visible to everyone.

OXM: How will you use this info when developing future Assassin's Creed titles?

JSD: We're going to use it, we're going to analyse it, we're going to see if there are patterns we can understand from it, but we're not just going to use it like - they loved that mission, I want more of that mission, next game everybody makes that same mission! Because maybe nobody will appreciate something we really love. So it's more of a hint for us - OK, we should find a way to make that mission more appealing, because we think it's right, but they don't like it.
