The first Touhou game released for Windows, Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is also the first Touhou game with a storyline.

A red mist has blocked out the Sun, and you (either Marisa or Reimu) must deal with it's source, a figure known as the Scarlet Devil.

Since it was released on computers widely available in North America, this was the first Touhou game to get a substantial North American fanbase.
