Try reading through this topic, it's asking a similar question to yours (and Francis gives a brilliant analogy :U)

Now it makes less sense.

So if I found an Animal Crossing soundtrack torrent, I'd have to wait for other people to give me each individual song one at a time?

The torrent program (Usually BitTorrent or uTorrent) does this automatically.

www.utorrent.com go to the downloads page and download version 1.8.1 stable.

Then install it and open it up. Then go to file and select "Add torrent".
Choose the torrent file you wanna unpack and it should start automatically.

This is what I just have to do. I made a folder called Torrents.

1) Download the torrent and open it with uTorrent/whatever Torrent.
2) Choose the folder it should be placed in.
3) Wait some time
4) Voila!

Also, if you have Firefox, it auto-detects and allows you to just open it with uTorrent, Bittorrent, etc.

Oh crag yes, nice analogy Francis. (Couldn't say that in original topic cause the Necropost Underchomp would get me.)
Personally, I prefer to just download individual files on their own instead of trying to torrent it. For one, I'm only on my computer some of the time, and the modem is on my dad's computer when I'm not using it. (...Can an interrupted torrent be resumed from where it got stopped?...) It makes it easier (on my part), and I know exactly when the file has downloaded. And it hogs my bandwidths for a shorter time.

Yes, you can resume torrents from where I left off. For example, if I wanted to download the rom for a PS1 game, I could use the torrent, get it to, let's say 15%, shut down my computer, and have it at that same amount downloaded. This is mostly because of how the torrent works, it directly writes the files to your computer
