This is what I see..
In the 1920s, psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach developed a set of complex inkblots which patients were instructed to look at one card at a time and report "everything the inkblot resembles". The examiner reviewed each response, asked for clarification and determined what features of the blot prompted a particular response.
Unfortunately, these projective tests have limited reliability and validity because examiners must base their interpretations on impressionistic evidence as well as on their sense of the patient's general reaction to the situation (e.g., defensive, open, etc.). In today's business world, employee evaluations contain levels of subjectivity that often rival that found in the historic "ink blot" test.
Proper employee evaluation requires more training and insight than any other personnel process. Yet typical evaluations of performance are conducted without the luxury of training and often with the handicap of annual delays between specific actions and meaningful feedback.
