This is an open-source offline archive of betalands[1]. (So no multiplayer, server, or database).
Some added features to make the most of your visit:
Play as any user. Access all their custom items and tiles, and edit their rooms/levels.
Warp directly to any room or level and even “lost levels” that had no door to reach them.
Reset the whole world to see how it was in the beginning.
Hyperlink to your current state (room, player, equips) to share your favorites.
Fixed the YouTube player (the in-game TV is too small, so the videos now play in the corner of your browser window).
Future updates:
Ability to save and share new creations.
Let me know of any bugs or if anything is missing.
It’s open-source so anything could happen if you want it to! (The code is over a decade old but hopefully not too terrible)
Some of the levels and sprite work you all created is quite impressive so I’m glad to finally get this released so it can be enjoyed forever. And now I can focus on the next-gen bitlands game…
Betalands was a HTML/JavaScript online-multiplayer user-generated persistant-world 2D-platformer game I started in 2013. ↩︎
Wow. There’s a whole lot more archived Betalands levels on here than I even knew existed. I really do appreciate this and still think this is a cool concept to this day.
First impressions:
The position of the YouTube player feels odd but understandable. Considering most of the old videos are either lost to time or just songs, the player might not even be necessary. Also, clicking on the player will take control of your mouse and keyboard until you tab out of it.
The game’s movement feels odd in Firefox (at least under my profile), and often won’t jump after w/up is pressed. The movement is perfectly fine in Chromium though. Maybe this has something to do with an extension, WebGL being disabled, or ResistFingerprinting being enabled?
Was the in-game TV deemed too small because of personal preference or YouTube embedded player requirements? If the latter, I have to call BS. It can be done, and IMO, this looks better than having the player shoved in the corner. Is it time to make my first pull request?
It was not working last time I tried, I believe they added minimum requirements on how the player is displayed. Maybe because your wide screen it made it large enough? Try a smaller browser window
Huh, I just tried it and it’s working for me now too. Even though the docs still say it has to be at least 200px . So I’ll put it back but it may stop working again one day.
I started on betalands late 2012 and I was not aware of Manyland at all. But I remember feeling discouraged when I stumbled upon manyland a year or two later and it did dampen my desire to keep working on it. But seeing manyland also validated my vision to keep betalands more organized and not become, in my opinion, a chaotic mess. (I also had similar mixed-emotions when Nintendo announced Mario Maker in 2014)
I see now that Manyland shut down earlier this year . I still think there is still a real demand for something like this and I hope to revamp my game soon.
