Google Could Be Forced to Sell Off Chrome. Estimates at $20 Billion.

Not quite sure how to feel. One one hand, I hate Google, but on the other hand, Mozilla is highly dependent on Google for funding. Not that Mozilla is really doing much good these days either, but one must pick from the poisons. I just hope this doesn’t lead to Opera GX gaining any popularity. That spyware should stay in the gwave where it belongs.

Making people aware that they are choosing Google is enough IMO. Not sure why they would need to sell off Chrome.

I think that would be a difficult task to accomplish. The average user just wants a usable browser. They don’t care about whatever illusion of choice they have or whatever PUPs/spyware comes along with it. I would argue that these users aren’t really choosing Chrome but just the most convenient option.

What I think should happen is getting device manufacturers to stop preinstalling Chrome and making their users install their own browsers. Maybe they could learn a thing or two in the process.

in that case most people would just use edge or safari or whatever

Ideally no browser would come preinstalled to really address the issue of choice. Easier said than done, I know.

But how would you install a new browser if you can’t view HTML pages? I realize the command line could be used, but most people don’t know how to do that.

Ever hear of the App Store/Google Play Store? Windows is the only modern mainstream OS without a package manager. I’m not suggesting that normies should learn the CLI or GTFO here.

So, I suppose in the case of an OS without a package manager I would like to see a list of a few different popular browsers available to install provided in the installer. In the case that the manufacturer preinstalls the OS, I would like to see the manufacturer provide an equivalent user-friendly installation wizard. That’s my ideal vision, but that will never happen.

App stores on desktop computers, right! I forget that that’s a thing now because I never use them, lol. I’m a bit oldschool in that way.
