Just Watched the Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Post your thoughts ITT if anyone else sees it.
I thought it was really fun and pretty funny albeit kind of all over the place. Seeing Fox and Rob make their appearance was really neat, though it also felt like they were trying to just throw in a whole bunch of characters/elements from as many games as possible (Mr. Game & Watch cameo?). Again, a fun watch and great animation, but felt at times more like a Super Mario Franchise movie than the Super Mario Galaxy movie. RIP to the castle rebuilding scene’s animation budget lol. The 2D was fun but felt out of place IMO.

I felt the same way about that last part, but I loved all of the references in the movie.

I’m pretty disappointed, since I really liked the first one which was very rewatchable with many memorable scenes and quotes, and a relatively easy to follow plot.

This one had so much pointless exposition or scenes that had little to no source from Mario’s world/situations, while also doing more than one very literal SMB gameplay scenes. Many scenes overstaying their welcome with too many pointless action scenes. Few quotable or memorable moments, and a convoluted plot/progression that’s hard to follow or remember how or why things happened. It’s like it had a solid beginning and ending but then they handed it off to a different team to fill in the middle.

One example is Mini Bowser, which was funny and cute at the end of the first movie, but we didn’t need more. Bowser Jr could have rescued him in the beginning of this one and that be it, but nooo they had to drag that out for waaay too long.

Also I’m pissed the credits were done in paper/cardboard yet they didn’t think to do a Paper Mario reference.

Best thing was a girl in line at the theater saw my Paper Mario shirt and was super excited.

“Wow look it’s Paper Mario!”
“The best kind of Mario” I replied

I saw it this past weekend, I enjoyed it. I really didn’t care about the story as much, I honestly just went in expecting to just have fun because that’s about what the first one was, and yeah that’s what this was as well, just something for my brain to go in and only point out references to stuff I like lol.

it was okay i guess

-!!! all your spoilers are belong to me !!!-

* they referenced practically every single mainline mario game and yet the most love they gave to sunshine was a pianta onscreen for 3 seconds
* speaking of references, i kinda got annoyed at how much attention they gave to odyssey over actual galaxies from mario galaxy 1/2, much missed potential
* was not a fan of the modified plot and lore (yes i will be the nerd who is upset when movie ≠ source material)
* while i appreciate luigi being given a real role in the plot this time, it seems rosalina stepped up to fill the “no screen time” shoes in his stead
* i feel there could’ve been more time spent focused on the relationship between bowser and junior, they halfway set up what sounded like a strained relationship between them but just threw it out so they could have their big evil galaxy cannon
* overall the plot was just anticlimactic as well, it ended right as it was really just getting started, and they neglect tying up the loose ends (namely bowser and junior and peach and rosalina’s family dynamic) they created in favor of a second (unnecessary) silly mario maker reference

* star fox anime-ish segment was fuckin killer though can you believe the most love star fox has seen in like 30 years is in a completely unrelated movie

also, bonus tangent:
for me the previews before the film included two switch 2 ads only featuring somewhat annoying kids, and i couldn’t help but think of the wii u in that moment
